It's a matter of genus. Species of the following genera do not require sand:
Cirrhilabrus (fairy), Labroides (cleaner), Paracheilinus (flasher), Pseudocheilinus, Pseudocheilinops, and Wetmorella (possum).

I'm not willing to list common names, because firstly they're not universal but more-so there are 75+ unique species covered by the above. :p

Hunter is the wrasse whisperer. I would highly recommend any of those fish he listed above, and yes, common names drive me insane as well. Especially Christmas Wrasse..

To add to Hunter's answer, Pseudocheilinops (Pink-streaked Wrasse) and Wetmorella (Possum, Pygmy Wrasses; Tanaka's Pygmy Wrasse) Wrasses are great if you want peaceful ones that hide in the rocks and don't mind seeing them only once a day or even once every few days.

Pseudocheilinus (Lined Wrasses; Six-line, Four-line, Mystery Wrasse) Wrasses can get aggressive and if you add one of any species, you may not be able to add any other Wrasse.

Labroides (Cleaner Wrasses) Wrasses can be tricky to maintain and some species are near impossible to keep long term in captivity. Thoroughly research your desired species before purchase.

Cirrhilabrus (Fairy Wrasses) and Paracheilinus (Flasher Wrasses) are ideal reef fish and terminal males can be absolutely stunning! Some of my favorite Fairy Wrasses are Lineatus, Pintail, Lunatus, Labout's, Earl's, Flame. Flasher Wrasses aren't, ironically, as "flashy" as Fairies, but some of the nicer ones are Attenuatus, Mauritius, Angular, Yellow-fin, Blue.

This, along with expansion of this, from Half Vaped. I have kept all except Pseudocheilinus due to their aggressive nature.
