I know some wrasses use a sand bed to hide\sleep in. My questions is it 100% necessary or will the fish adapt. I am looking to get a Leopard wrasse and do currently have a sand bed but am contemplating removing all my sand to go BB. Any help would be great.
I wouldn't recommend it at all, and certainly not with more delicate species like leopard wrasses. However, they are small enough that you might be able to get away with the tupperware full of sand trick.
That is how I QT'ed my leopards in my bare bottom tank. One thing you'll need to take into consideration is that even with a tupperware, your leopard is going to spread the sand on to the bottom of your tank over time and you'll have to top up the sand from time to time. Just thought I'd let you know before you make your decision.
I personally would never have leopard wrasses in a bare bottom tank. Some of them at times will stop burying themselves on a daily basis, but still will do it if they feel threatened.
