Wrasse & tank covers.(Solon Fairy Wrasse)

I would like to pick up a Solon Fairy Wrasse. I have an Ornate wrasse that i have kept for a year with no jumping problems. The tank was covered for half that time and no longer is now.

I no longer have the Ornate wrasse and not due to jumping. Whats other members experiences keeping Wrasse's in uncovered tanks??? Is it only a matter of time till they jump and a huge risk? I can't say that I'm very fond of the egg crate look on tanks. Any other ideas? None that i can think of...

I'm running a Coralife elite fixture 250x2 MH w/ 2x96w Pc's. Its setup in my living room currently on a 75 gal tank. I found it blinding to sit on the couch near the tank and watch TV. So i toolk some plexi glass and cut to fit a length across the front. 1st painted black and then covered by white gloss. I have the front and back enclosed but the sides open.

I suppose i could enclose the sides. I'm sure heat may possibly become an issue then.

Any ideas or experiences?

Are the Solon Fairy wrasse awesome and frequent jumpers?

Thanks

I had lost a sixline wrasse I'd had for a long time. Found him dried up behing the tank. I was sitting at my computer one morning and when the lights clicked on I heard a splash from my tank, went to go check it out and my yellow coris wrasse had jumped out.
I think they are especially prone to jumping out when the lights come on and it scares the living heck out of them. I read somewhere that fish have sensitives eyes and it is better for them to have more natural gradual changes in lighting intensity. I was wondering if a dimmer helps out in this department myself.

if you do not have your tank enclosed somhow, you will lose at least 1 fish to jumping, if not more. Not a guarantee, but a pretty valid prediction. Find some way to keep them contained. I have a similar problem with my lights, but I use glass tops over the tank until I can build a canopy.
Wrasses jump- the sky is blue.

Good to know. Thanks. Halides slowly come upto full burn so maybe that will help.

Also the fixture is mounted with Legs and the glass is around 4-5" off the water. So maybe he would just bounce off it I close the front and back. I'd like to keep the sides open tho.

Just affraid to chance it. I maybe have to try the egg crate:( Would make it extremely difficult to get into the tank with the fixture above it. Almost impossible to move or feed corals.

Mine usually do bounce back in...but last night when I had my canopy off to do my water change, I saw my carpenders fairy wrasse flopping around on the floor! good thing I got to it in time...I have heard my other wrasses hit the light fixture and bounce back in, but mine sits directly on the tank. you might want to consider a glass cover ateast for the back....

btw...I love my solor fairy wrasse! People always ask what it is b/c it has such great color and loaded with personality!! You'll enjoy it

Wrasses jump. Eggcrate is normally not sufficient. I have two completely enclosed tanks and I hear them bouncing of the sides all the time. Your choice. Best of luck.
