The Carpenter's wrasse has 2 to 4 yellow filaments on it's dorsal fin, sometimes with black on the tail and dorsal fin. The McCosker's wrasse has one yellow filament on its dorsal fin.
Also, the article indicates that they come from distinct areas. Carpenters' come from Southern Japan, Philipines, and Palau. McCoskers' come from the Indian Ocean and Andaman Sea.
The care for them is identical. In my area, Carpenters' are more commonly available and generally (but not always) less expensive. They also tend to come in larger than the McCoskers'.
