Wrasses, wrasses and wrasses!

It depends do you have coral at all in your tank and is it going to be an aggressive tank
I personally wouldn't keep a wrasse without a deep sand bed because they burry themselves when they sleep or are stressed.

90% of wrasses sleep in the sand bed. ALL of them will sleep in rock work if no sand is provided but its not the same you will see a snott cacoon all up in your rocks from certain wrasse trying to protect themselves at night but if you get a wrasse that is known to bury in the sand bed and you do not provide him with sand he could damage his mouth by slamming into the glass repeatedly or ever stress itself to death.

IMO , You should do some research... Fairy and flasher wrasses do fine without a sand 'bed'

Your arguing for the sake of it, look at reef safe wrasse in liveaquairia or whatever fish website you look at. Once you've done that look at the species family name for example:

Flasher wrasses or, Paracheilinus are in the same catagory. The ones that DO NOT bury are REAL Coris, Wetmorella, Thalassoma, Gomphosus, Anampses, Pseudodax, Novaculichthys, Choerodon and Cheilinus.

Now all of those are readily avalible BUT are large in size (180 gal or bigger) and are mostly aggressive. Not only that but the subspecies of each one of those family are 2-5 different types. SO as I was saying the MAJORITY bury themselves. Anything else I can help you with:debi:

All the ones I listed above with their trade name are safe for corals they my pick on little snails small shrimp like harliquin or baby hermits. If you have any question just shoot me a PM and I'll help you out.
 
It's on like donkey kong! My quest to have a wrasse dominant tank is underway with addition of a Christmas wrasse. Him and my yellow coris are best buds and follows him everywhere. Eating mysis like a pig! Trying to get a pic, but he's very fast!

Sign me up for the Wrasse club now! They were never on my stock list until I saw this Yellow Coris in a tank at the Corner Reef. I loved him at first sight. He's been super active and eating like a pig in the 3 days that I've had him home. My favorite fish by far. Now all that I'm thinking about it getting my 180 gallon up and running so I can get a few more. :)

One thing I have seen work is to put a container with 4-5" of sand somewhere in the tank that the wrasse can sleep in, but the container has to be large enough for the wrasse to lay down flat in it without touching the sides. Just a thought!
 
I currently have a large melanurus for over a year in 65g mixed reef with Carib sea oolite sand. Currently building 125 sps dominate tank with lots of flow. My question is what's the largest sand grain size I can go with that would be safe for the wrasse and not be blown all over the tank.
 
this is a good question. I have special grade in the front of the tank now and am working on siphoning the rest of the olite out of the back. Should i leave this smaller grain stuff in the back?
 
This is an old thread I know, but lots of wrasse lover here..... Has anyone used an egg crate with a acrylic top over the egg crate to stop the wrasses from jumping, still room for air exchange? Just a thought, I'm thinking of adding 3 or 4 wrasses to my 90 gallon D.T. Not sure exactly which wrasses yet. I have only one clownfish and a Neon Blue Goby in the tank now, recently lost a Kole Tang as I was trying to rid my tank of an algae bloom, probably starved him and loss of a power head at the same time.
