Anyone know where I can buy egg crate? Or does anyone have any laying around that I could buy? I want to replace my tank top with it (I have a few jumpers so I need some sort of top).

lighting/ceiling tile section. The intended use is a difuser for recessed flourescent lighting....sold in 2'x4' pieces (same as ceiling tiles.

What about "black" eggcrate. When I bought some white eggcrate at HD a couple of years ago, they only had white and a silverish color.

I've only seen the black eggcrate online...for example...

Contact Dave aty Oceans Floor. Last time I was there, he had a truckload of egg-crate and was selling it at very low prices! :)

I think he also has some extra black egg-crate, if you want that.

Next question. Is egg crate cool for a top? I need something other than my glass top. It seems no matter how much I work at it I cannot keep it completely clean and I think I am screwing the fish and corals out of lots of light.

do they make 4'x4' sections of egg crate, would be perfect for my corner tank?

I've never seen one. You can just buy the big one and then just cut it to fit your needs. Home Depot has it all the time!

Ask Dave at Ocean's Floor. He snagged a ton at closeout. I think he wanted $5 a sheet which is well under HD prices.

The black eggcrate is cool for frag racks or to cover overflows, but I wouldn't cover my tank with it. It won't reflect the light like the white stuff. Also I read here on RC that someone had the silver coating flake off the silver eggcrate. I also read in Calfo's old forum that eggcrate can actually increase the light in your tank by reflecting stray rays of light down into your tank. I'm not sure that thread is still on here, you might want to do a search for it.

Swamp Donkey, I used the black egg-crate for the top of my hex tank, since I didn't need too much light. I just took the 2x4 size and cut it down to the size I needed. I used the black because it looks better than the white for a top. It works great!

bboersma79, I've seen a few lighting manufacturers with the 4x4, but wouldn't recommend it any larger than 2x4, because of stability. You could probably go to the ceiling tile section at your DIY and buy some plastic suspended ceiling tile joiners to build supports for the 2x4 egg-crate if you need larger than that.

BenjieC, Yes, I agree that it works great for frag racks and it does block more light than the white, but don't worry about flaking. The black is not a coating and won't flake off like the silver.

Again, Talk to Dave at Oceans Floor. I think he has plenty of white and probably a few sheets of the black too!

Boyd :)

I know that the black is a black plastic. I just wanted to steer people away from using the eggcrate that's coated with silver.

I'm pretty sure that Oceans Floor, Sea Schor and Sharky's Reef are all using the black. I like it because it doesn't show the uglees so much!
