I have a 6 gallon under-tank refugium in which I want to culture algae and keep LR. Looking for a light that will be suitable for this purpose; nothing fancy. Anyone selling, or have suggestions?

melev has a post up with a bulb that he uses from homedepot...i can't remember the name of the thread though. try checking his gallery, it might be in there.

Lowes has a compact flourescent bulb that is in a reflector housing. Looks like a flood light. It is the same one in Melevs thread. I have them on both sumps. They are in a uti;ity fixture that has a squeeze clamp. They only draw 17 or 18 watts but are equal to 75 watts. Mine are like 2600 color . There are 5000 plus bulbs available over the net, but I get great growth.

Thanks for the info. Do you happen to know the make/model?

Walmart has a flood light from lights of america thats a 65 watt PC 6500K (perfect for refugium) for $11

Not all walmarts carry them, But I know the one in Cerritos has a ton

Costco sometimes carries the LOA light, as does Home Depot. Works great, but it is a hot running item and they don't tend to last long. Modifying the case to improve airflow will help extend it's lifespan.

I have the LOA. Great item.

Nicole is right. Try to take it out of the housing and mount in somewhere. A small fan may help too.

I bought a 65w 6500k at HD for $20...it is a desk lamp...replaceable bulb and whatnot...they got to have something.

I ended up buying the TCP 5100k CF reflector recommended on Melev's website. It was $20 locally. After a few days the algae in the fuge is growing! Thanks for the advice.
