WTB Salt water help

I am almost ready to fill my new tank , can any of you recommend the easiest way to purchase 700+ gallons of salt water. I'm looking for some ideas. Price and convenience are a couple factors in the decision, any ideas would be appreciated. Filling 5g jugs and mixing it myself seems to be the hardest and probably the cheapest.

That Catalina water sounds like the easiest option but you could also consider buying a Spectra Pure MaxCap 90 or 180 ro/di system and a couple 55g or larger drums or tanks. I would suggest the 180 for your needs though. This way you can make your own water both now and in the future.it would benefit you for future water needs. But even if you do not do it for the initial fill up To be totally honest I am surprised that someone with a 135g setup does not already have their own ro/di setup.

If you end up mixing the saltwater yourself & you didn't know already, When initially filling the tank because there isn't any livestock present you can mix the saltwater directly in the tank itself. There was a video by Tony Vargas I believe it was where the outlet line of a rodi system was extended about 30 feet or so directly into a large tank. Then the rodi unit was left on for several days to fill the tank without manually moving any water in buckets.

1) fill tank / sump with rodi
2) turn pumps on to circulate water
3) add salt directly to tank until desired salinity is reached

I did this on my 300.

I can't imagine anyone with a tank over 30 G not have their own RODI system. I think it is a must have. Making your own RODI & salt water is the only way to go & easy enough that a technically challenged old lady like me can do it!

Thanks for the responses. I left a message with Catalina, so I will see what they have to say. I have live sand and rock that have been in a stock tank, For a few months. So I was hoping to place that in while adding premixed salt water. I currently do not have a 135 set up (sold) and I haven't updated my profile in quite a while. I have thought of buying a ro/di unit. But shockingly never spent the money for one, water changes on a 135g weren't really that bad. I will mix it in the tank if the Catalina thing doesn't work out.

Dude, get a Spectrapure RODI for reefs sake!!

Lugging water, buying water, day after day, week after week will make you hate this hobby and in a few months you will be on here selling all your stuff, saying you don't have the time for a reef.

After months into this hobby and a lot of money wasted on inferior RODI and LFS water AND just overall bad water, I bought a MaxCap 90 and several problems went away almost over night.

By far, the BEST piece of equipment I have bought in this hobby was the MaxCap!
Also, a MaxCap will pay for its self in 6 to 12 months over LFS, Catalina or other systems!

Love the hobby, get a MaxCap!

Good luck!

Haha. The OP has been on here since 2008 and been lugging water the whole time lol. :lmao:

Haha for me, I will look into one for sure. I got a reasonable quote from Catalina, so I will fill it that way, instead of waiting weeks to fill it up with a RO system , and burning through filters. And I will use the RO for top offs and water changes.
On a separate note, this forum could be a lot better if/when some one posts something on here. Perhaps you should follow this yourself~dc I was under the impression this site was a tool to get help, knowledge and ideas from other salt water hobbyists. Just a thought from myself and dozens of others who do not attend or participate in threads, meets, and auctions like they once did, because of people like the all mighty salt.

I only state what works for me and what has not worked for me. I learn something new every time I spend more than 5 minutes on this forum and especially at the meetings!

Removed~dc

I learned a long time ago to NOT have thin skin on these forums, True, but you don't need to insult others either~dc

BUT, then again, being a Bucs fan, I can understand your bad attitude....4/11:frog:

Merry Christmas!

I appreciated your input and will take your advice on your experiences, you put your responses and opinions in a constructive manner. I myself do not post on here telling what is right or wrong on reefing because, believe it or not, after being in this hobby since 2008 I do not know enough to tell people what's wrong or right. I get most of my advice from a couple buddies who know a whole lot more than I do. Maybe d -bag is the wrong choice of word, but that's the only word I could come up with for someone who would only say things on a forum, and not in person.
As far as the bucs go, next year is our year. Or at least that's what I have been saying since 03'

I can't really talk, I'm a Cards fan....:crazy1: I was also a Patriots fan in the 70's and 80's when they broke the records for most consecutive losses in the NFL amoung other loser records.
Maybe next year, right?!

BTW, don't ever think you don't have something to add! Even if you only had 30 days into this so-called hobby, you may be able to help someone that has 15 days or 15 years. Also, if you hear something said that you know is wrong, from your experience, speak up and say whats worked for you. Research is your best BS filter on these forums!

Good luck with your tank!
Post some pics when you get water in it.

On a separate note, this forum could be a lot better if/when some one posts something on here. D -bags with 1000's of posts stop criticizing what equipment someone does/doesn't have. I have followed many of posts and it will usually end up with a so called experts, saying someone else is lame for using, or not using a specific type/brand of equipment or product. I was under the impression this site was a tool to get help, knowledge and ideas from other salt water hobbyists. Just a thought from myself and dozens of others who do not attend or participate in threads, meets, and auctions like they once did, because of people like the all mighty salt.

Not sure who you are referring to in this thread. Although the only person who has salt in their user name is me but yet I never called you anything or was critical of you or your choice. I merely mentioned I was surprised that you didn't and suggested a good one to get. If it was me you were referring to then I will remember not to try to help you in the future.

edit:
Looking back I do think you are referring to me. Perhaps you are thinking that my post about you being here since 2008 was a dig at you. It was not directed at you but was directed at bugs hence why I quoted him. I was merely pointing out to him that you were not going to go anywhere as you have been here since 2008.

LOL, you do have a point! He may be one of the most dedicated AND muscular reefers here.:p

All in fun Bucs_fan!
Did you get your Catalina water yet?

Ok guys, let's relax here. No need to insult people that don't do things your way. Or reply badly either.
