WTB Seahorses

The name of the thread says it all. A bacterial infection nearly wiped out my herd. Now that I have it under control, I am looking to restock.

I am able to make it around to the local stores, so I know what they have. If there is anyone who is considering selling your horses, please PM me. I certainly don't want to get anyone or any stores in trouble, so let's please keep this all to PM's

I have posted on OMAS, but would also be interested in finding out if any of the Tulsa area stores are carrying horses.

One last item. I have been told there is a LFS in or near the Shawnee mall that carries seahorses. If anyone knows the name of this, or any other LFS between here and Tulsa, please PM me.

Thanks for all of your help.

In Tulsa, I've seen Ultimate Reefs and Aquarium Oddballs have seahorses on a fairly regular basis. I'm not in Premier Aquatics enough, but it wouldn't surprise me if Scott has, had, or could get them in. I've never seen any ponies at Reef Revolutions, and I don't think they have any setup that could keep them. That doesn't mean they don't plan to or haven't in the past.

Thanks Travis, but I was really just trying to find out if any of the stores had horses in right now, before I made the 3 hr journey their way.

If I could get names of those who had horses today, I would give them a call to verify what they had, as I am looking for some very specific horses - female h. reidi. Just trying to do some homework before I wasted an entire day driving. My tank is too full of corals to buy any more, so all I really want for Christmas are my 2 front teeth....er, more seahorses.

I would place money down that Ultimate Reefs has horses in. Ever since they set up their tank, I've never seen it empty. Aquarium Oddballs usually has horses in, but I've seen him not have them a couple of times. I have a feeling that the horses that they do get in are H. erectus though. Just give them a buzz.

Ultimate Reefs: (918) 622-6366
Aquarium Oddballs: (918) 831-0099
Premier Aquatics: (918) 497-1212
Reef Revolutions: (918) 392-1962

I'll be up in Tulsa tonight and tomorrow. I'll keep an eye out for them, but I won't be able to report back until Wednesday (4-Day Weekend, baby!!!)

The store in Shawnee is Petopia;

They do not regularly carry them anymore but will order them in.

It is where I bought my reidi pair, and she will special order anything and she gives a 25% to OKAA members.

If you need any further info just let me know.

Travis, I was at Ultimate Reefs two weeks ago and didn't see any SH in there. I could have missed them, but I don't think so. I'd call just in case, like April said, it's a 3 hour drive.

I haven't been in Tulsa or UR in about a month, but if it's all still the same, they are in a 30g cube left of the TV and right of the in-wall Display. He has lots of various algae in the tank and the seahorses hide VERY well in there.

Travis, thank you so much for all of the phone numbers. I know I have all of the various cards, but finding them is another story. What fun having such a long weekend!

Herpchat, thanks for the info on Petopia. That's exactly the one I was looking for. An ex-coworker lived in Shawnee and was telling me about it, but of course I forgot the name (I'm absolutely AWFUL with names!) and the location. I'll give them a call too.

April I was at CCA about three days ago and they still had a fully stocked SH tank. You might call them to see if they have the specific ones you are looking for

you might give steve at wetpets a call i think he got in seahorses from ora last week i know the reidi's were on the list i saw before he placed the order but im not sure which ones he did get in

charlie

Yup, ORA reidi were on the list. I bought the only one he had in. She's a beauty - WHITE! Now I need a red one and and orange one and a green one.....

Found some, going to look at them this morning. Wish me luck!

Well, my quest was successful. After dialing all the numbers given above and striking out, I finally found some reidi at Petopia in Shawnee. Went to look, and bought all 4 they had. I'm sure I've got 2 males and 1 female, the last one is iffy, but I believe it's a juvie male. I wasn't really looking for males, but now I've possibly got 3 breedable pairs, since I already had 2 females.

One of the males is already making eyes at the white female. Today he's even changing color to match hers! Two others are yellowish, the other is brown, but he's the youngest and hasn't decided what he wants to be when he grows up. I've taken some pictures, but they are downloaded to another computer, so since hubby is sick, I'll have to wait for his help to get them onto mine.

Looks like I may be trying to raise the ever formidable reidi seahorse yet again.

On another note, we also adopted a puppy while we were in Shawnee, from Pet Friends, which is no affiliation to the one in Edmond. We were told she's a Great Pyranees, but we were also told she was a boy..... Anyone know if Great Pyranees are born brown and turn white as they get older? No real matter, she's a darling and cute as a button. Merry Christmas to me!

Actually, I don't have any techniques, as I've never been even remotely successful with the reidi. I've gotten erectus to maturity once or twice, but never reidi.

As tax season is coming up, I'll probably let these little ones mature for awhile and begin thinking about raising babies after April 15th.

There's some good information on raising babies at www.seahorse.org under the propagation and rearing section.
Thanks again for the name of the store.

April;

In your searches of area stores did you come across any nice Erectus available or Barbs? I may be wanting to add one or two to my herd.

Carolyn

Petopia has had erectus.

I am on Seahorse.org for quite a while now. I have followed a number of their techniques without success.

I am now looking for a method that works for me. My male produces fry every 20 days like clockwork.

Every 19-20 days sounds extremely typical for reidi.

The best help I can give you at this point is don't let them get to the top of the water, and feed rotifers for the first few days, graduating to BBS for the next few weeks. Good luck! I may be coming to you for advice by April or May...

April, I see you have found your horses, but as promised, here is what I found in Tulsa.

Ultimate Reefs: "Seahorses" - $54.00
Premier Aquatics: N/A Forgot to ask if they can get them in.
Reef Revolutions: N/A Forgot to ask if they can get them in.
Aquarium Oddballs: None at the time. Can get them in.

I'm not sure on the species of the horses at UR, and I would have to see pictures of the different species to tell you. I'm positive they aren't H. kuda ;) Most likely either H. reidi or H. erectus.

Petopia sells reidi for $38 each.

The erectus sell for about $50 or so each.

I guess I should check to see if they would give COMAS members a discount, they give OKAA members a 25% discount.

Being as how I bought 4 at over 38.00 ea, and drove all the way there from OKC, a discount would have been nice, but I didn't ask. I was happy with the price, and at simply finding what I wanted.

The difference in the price probably has more to do with how they are raised than the difference in species. The "tank raised" reidi are very likely "net" raised in the ocean, and still subject to whatever parasites and diseases may occur. These horses really should be dewormed, FW dipped, treated for parasites and kept away from any other horses, as they may be carrying diseases they themselves are not prone to get.

The erectus are probably "captive bred (CB)" meaning they were born in a tank, raised in a mostly sterile environment and have never come in contact with any parasites or diseases, thus they do not have to be dewormed, treated for parasites, and should not be carrying any diseases.

I was happy with my purchase, even in knowing the difference in "tank raised" and "captive bred" because I fully intended to place them in a tank which already housed a "wild caught (WC)" female who had survived vibrio, a disease that all horses carry, but also one that kills most of them.

Travis, the difference between reidi and kuda is difficult at best, especially when your talking juveniles. Reidi tend to be more colorful as adults, and have larger snouts. Erectus are easy - they're the striped seahorses, even as babies. When they become adults, they get very broadchested. There are lots of pictures of the different species at www.seahorse.org in the library.

Thanks again for all of the help.
