WTB: Tank raised Banggai cardinalfishes

I want to buy two of these fish, does anyone know a local source for tank raised Banggai? I have heard wild caught typically fair poorly and I would like to be certain that I get tank raised.

Thanks,
Angela

Hey Angela,

Try PMing miracles38. She was selling some about a month ago. You can see if she still has some. She is in the Davis area.

I called Dolphin, in search of a female Bangaii. Whoever was there told me they couldn't tell the sex of them. I'm totally guessing that the one I have is male, and I guess I can gamble and just get one from Dolphin. But I thought they'd be able to tell.

Sexing Banggai is very difficult to impossible. The store is not at fault, you wouldn't be able to tell most likely unless the male was carrying eggs. . . There is no way, if your fish is alone, to tell it is a male so don't assume.

I'd also love a pair, but i'm not betting on it.

Ah, so it's basically a crapshoot. I tried to gather info on sexing them and at most I got;

1) males MIGHT have a longer "banner" fin. But in a community tank, most likely all the banners have been "trimmed" by other fish

2) females have a more rounded jawline, where males have a more angular jaw.

So since I have no frame of reference except pics on the internet, I figured that mine MIGHT be male. So if I go to the store, maybe I can use those clues to pick a higher-probabiliy female. Then when I get home I'll have either a f/m pair or a f/f pair. But if I pick a suspected male for home, then I'll end up with m/f or m/m. And from what I can tell, getting m/m is worst case scenario due to some territorialism. So if I could pick a best-guess female, I'd have a better chance. Sort of.

But I guess that I can just keep adding them until I find a pair, as every time I buy one is a 50% chance of pairing up the one(s) in the tank. Interestingly, (when buying a single fish) the chance of a pair is always 50% regardless of how many are already in the tank!

."..pick a higher-probabiliy female"

Sure, that sounds like a plan. But, after reading up I am not sure i'd just wander aimlessly to any store to buy one. Make sure you get tank-raised, apparently most non-tank-raised seem to die after a short period of time (something like <1 year.)

Good luck, lmk how it goes...

Males have the rounder jaw line. Females jaws are much more angular. It is easy for me to tell since my male is almost constantly carrying babies. He has some right now that are ready to come out if I could only catch him!

miracles38, if you have some "ready" in the future, I'd like to buy one from you UNLESS you got yours from Jimsar. The reason is that he gave me one with the idea that it be breed and the babies passed on, but he specifically didn't want him/her inbred.

I know Dolphin breeds them, so I'd pick one up from them otherwise.

Usually when you get tank raised Banggais, they are young and very difficult to sex. I think the males have a more bulldog face but like Angela said, almost impossible to tell unless he is holding eggs. To sex your mature Banggai, you can post a picture in the breeding forum. There are a few folks there that can give you a good guess.

Sexing Bangaii's is pretty darn difficult! Even if you get a female there is no guarantee that they will be compatible. The best way to establish "pairs" in my experience has been to purchase at least five fish and see who starts to separate off and swim together. Make sure to remove the others because the pair will start to thrash them. You might even get two pairs out of the group! Breeding them after that just takes time and patience if the pair decides that they want to breed.

Unfortunately at the moment I dont have any "solid" pairs. When I was on vacation my best breeders were lost do to circumstances out of my control :(

good luck

Thanks for the tips, Tyler.

I have reserved a group of 4 fish from Kim and i'm so excited to get them. Just a couple months out:)
