Xenia Died

I had a nice frag of Pom Pom Xenia that was doing great, it was growing taller all the time, and looked great in the tank.

Saturday night one of the stalks was shrunken and turning gray. Then Sunday the rest of them didn't extend out like normal, and by Sunday night they were all shrunken and gray. Today I came home and it looked the same, all shrunken down and gray in color.

Everything else in the tank is doing great, parameters are all normal, only differences that took place was I changed my carbon bag in my filter last week, and I added more lighting Saturday.

I've read that some people think carbon and xenia don't mix, but then I read another person saying they run carbon all the time and theirs is doing great.

Any ideas?

I had a couple of stalks i placed in my biocube that were doing great until i upgraded the stock lighting and forgot to lower them in the tank. I think the increase in light cooked them. I have moved them to a lower spot and they havent gotten worse but they are still looking bad. With time they should come back to good health. I have had some that i almost killed and they always come back healthy.

Yeah, that was my first thought was that I cooked them with the added lighting.

So, now I have them down on the sand and under my rock in the shade. Hopefully it will come back, I really liked it.

I've run carbon or chemipure and gfo and haven't had xenia shrivel like that. I have seen it bubble up and split after changing the lights.

I went from 2 -12" LED strips to 4-12" LED strips. It made a big difference in brightness, and that night is when they started shrinking up.

I'll wait it out and see how they do in the shade.

I had xenia shrink from either too much light or a heat spike...most likely in your case its the lighting intensity

I know mine was damaged from the increase in lighting. I have the new 29 gal biocube with hqi lights and went from the stock bulb to 20k bulb and the tops of my hard coral bleached white and all my mushrooms shriveled up as well as my xenia. These corals were all on the top of my rockwork. The ones at the bottem were not affected. I moved everything damaged down to the sandbed and most have recovered except the xenia. Its starting to look better but its taking time. I am sure it will come back to a full recovery.

Well I'm pretty sure mine is dead. It started falling off the rock yesterday, and this morning the rock was clean. So, if anything lives it's going to be spread around the tank wherever the pieces landed.

Oh well...............keep an eye out for a new frag of it.

mine died when i switched from T-5 to metal halide lights. they kinda melted away

Yeah, the lighting definitely killed it. Everything else in the tank is doing great and growing, but the Xenia just melted away and disappeared.

So, I'm looking for a new rock covered in Pink Pom Pom Xenia to replace it.

I know mine melted away when my heater got stuck on. about a month after the accident A little piece started to sprout up. so give it time they may come back lol no matter how much you may not want it to lol
