Xenia, do they require good flow and strong lighting to thrive?

Xenia will thrive in just about any condition. However, I would put them towards the top of your tank. They tend to move towards the light on their own and will spread everywhere along the way. Also, try to keep them isolated, othwise they will spread everywhere. If you bought a pulsing Xenia, make sure to keep your idodine levels up. There is no real proof, but people (me included) seem to think there is a connection between the pulsing and the idodine. Hope this helps.

In my experience, no to both questions. They look better (aesthetically) with mild to low flow. In high flow, you can't see the "hands" opening and closing and it looks ugly.

I have a frag of elongata that was in a shady spot under a rock. It's growing and thriving just fine there. I have others that are higher up in full light and they also do well. They don't seem to need bright light, but at the same time they will thrive under bright lights as well.

What cause them to turn brown? I see some that have nice beautiful white stalk at first but then turn ugly light brown.

I don't know. All the Xenias I've seen have been some variation of brown. The one I had was sort of a fleshy color.
