hiya folks,

i was extremely curious to have a more experienced pinpoint to what had happend to my xenia frags.

to start these things have been growing like weeds, i mean just an expolsion with good branching and nice long stalks and non-stop pulsing. well that was until about half a week ago then they just started to not pulsate, shrivel up and before i know it three days later they're all gone...just like disintegrate!

folks my parameters have not changed at all and everything in tank is fine...

lately my tank has had more algae showing up but still my parameters are perfect so im just lost on whats going on... parameters are

salinity-1.025
ph-8.4
nitrites-0
nitrates-0
ammonia-0
temp 78-80.5
althought i did check calcium and it was a lil higher than normal at 440!

please help

thnx again folks and sorry to always pesture=(
im just way paranoid about my tank...and i luv'd my xenias ;'-(

xenia tend to behave this way. they can be real healthy looking and expanding and just overnight all melt away. i usually will frag many stalks so they don't all die. sometimes xenia will come back on the spot. so keep the rock in place so now.

Try to raise your temp and salt levels just a hair and see how they react.

like 82 degrees and 1.026 or .027

only if you have a ready supply of someone with xenia that you can keep getting some from.

Iodine has never been proven to be effective at helping Xenia, unless there is some new scientific study that I am unaware of.

Alk is important though, for everything.

how old is the tank?

I don’t think the crash has anything to do with your water parameters.
When xenias crash everything seems to be going OK and then they start melting away. As the crash progresses do a water change and siphon out any dead tissue. If any healthy tissue from your xenias remains after the crash, more likely you will get new colony after everything stabilized in your tank. Keep up you regular maintenance and good water parameters and your xenia population may come back.
I hope this help.

Did you recently get any peppermint shrimp? I never caught them in the act, but I swear those guys eat xenia.

but why would it crash in the first place? thats the big question....why would it crash and than live after you siphon it out. why would the colonies live?

it makes sense to some degree, what is your hypothesis on this one?

i am not trying to add fuel to any fire, just wondering about the scientific method of what you are saying.

Well I agree with you m friend there is no explanation at all why xenias colonies crash, what I was saying in my previous post was that IF any xenia remains after the crash they may come back.
