I bought a xenia yesterday and at the store it was pulsing. When I put it in my tank last night it was pulsing. Today no pulsing. Why did it stop? It looks really happy, its just not pulsing.
From what I have read, there is no real rhyme nor reason about why Xenia will or won't pulse. IME, though, my Xenia island pulses best in low flow and lower light. I moved them around the tank until I found the sweet spot.
I use my Xenia to tell me when the water is good or bad.
Great water not much color and NO Pulse
Good water it's bright but doesn't always Pulse
Ok Water Great Color and lots of Pulsing
Bad water Ok Color and lots of Pulsing
If you look at the picture to the Left you can see those are all nicely colored but water quality wasn't perfect.
I'm going to try and figure out what exactly they pull out of the water but I know they help the Phosphates a little bit.
Mine are'nt affected by light. They are growing at the top of the tank right under the light and pulse all the time. For sure they are happier in less than pristine water. Even though my nitrates and phosphates are 0, I do feed a bit heavy.
Mine was pulsing a few months back but stopped when I started dosing vodka. I stopped the vodka cause I saw no improvements. Stable and slightly higher alk and ph helps with pulsing also. To much flow will stop it also.
