Xenia problems

I realized that my first coral I really love were Xenias. I had great success in the past where it just flourish. HOWEVER, in the last few years....I can't seem to keep xenias alive for more than a week....

Anyone know what could be wrong?

the LPS are doing well....the blue cesp is doing well too...but the pom poms just melt.

xenia is one of those corals that either thrive or perish early in some tanks,ive had a similar problem myself in the past, my sps corals are growing like mad but i cant keep yellow polyps, its the only coral i cant grow which ive kept haha, everything else no problem at all, and i see threads where everyone says they grow like mad and they are fed up with them lol, basically it may be you just cant grow that type of coral.

although a list of params and flow rates plus positioning information may help a bit

my theroy is that as people evolve to more challenging corals and better tank maintence, that something that things like xenia need are no longer present enough in the tank to keep them happy.

I have a couple of friends with the same problem.

I think the problem most of the time is how much of the nutrients in the water column are been skim out by our powerful protein skimmers.

Xenias are filter feed, if they don't find nothing to eat they'll die.

I have Xenias in my Bio Cube since I started the system almost seven months ago. They started to grow out of control, so I relocate them before they take most of my LR.

Also read somewhere that another problem will be the levels of iodine in your water. Maybe you should check this parameter just to make sure.

Honestly, I don't know what my perimeters are which I know that is being a bad hobbiest. I can't seem to fnd my tests kit after I broke down my 300.

But I do a weekly water change and dose calcium daily. Nitrate is at 0-5ppm.

The cesp is doing great, but regular xenias aren't.

i have a few friends ask me how i grow mine and i honestly have no answer for them.. they just grow..

heres mine.. im making frags and giving to fish store for store credit. They were everywhere.

When I bought my xenia it did not do great, but all of the sudden it is really taking off. My lfs has such a limited supply of corals that you have to take what you can get.

One thing I learned is that you can equate how clean is your tank by the way xenias grow.
If I become dont do maintenance for a couple of weeks you can watch thos puppies grow by the day.. I keep them in my tank as a reminder not to be lazy

What i have found is that xenia is very temp. sensative. I dont have a chiller and one year about fall i got some xenia from my lfs. It did great in the tank and then the summer heat hit and it was gone in a week.

Xenia has always grown like crazy at the start up of my mixed tanks... Then when when my nitrates finally fall and I'm starting to add sps, they usually melt away. I always associated with the lower nitrate level, as I never changed feeding/lighting/or any other param that I've noticed.
