Xenia Question

Hey, I'm wanting to add some xenia to my tank. I know that they are pretty much a hit-or-miss coral, but i like the looks. My ? is how many types of Xenia are there? I've seen many pics of different kinds, i was just wondering if any of you could clear it up for me. I'm wanting the ones that pulse. Also i'm wanting the ones that stay small and don't get to big/long. Any advice or ideas? Please post pics....

I have some silver tips that pulse like crazy. I love them, even though they are the weed of the reef.

It's grown twice this size since I took this pic.

Ours have thrived - yes, like weeds - but there's a great answer to that: frag trade! They're very easy to frag.

We just got blues, but I hear they are hard to keep alive - and we're proving that!

i dissagree xenia is probably the hardest one to kill asside from green star polyps. At least its proved so for me. That is all the xenia besides cespitulara (prolly butchered that spelling ) which is the blue xenia. That one is hard to keep as you can see from above lol.

But i've got the elongata xenia or whatever its called. The one w/the long arms. I hate it haha. Get one of the shorter ones like you say...the ones that have the more feathery looking fingers are the ones i'd get. I think one is a red sea xenia.

But they pretty much all pulse. There are a lot of variables tho. They tend to pulse more when closer to the light, and for sure when they're not in direct flow. But i find mine to grow better in strong flow.

Dont try the blue xenia just yet. Wait till you're really good about watching the levels and keeping them steady before attempting that one.

Come to So Florida and I will give you all the xenia you want.....I have tons and all kinds. This is just one side of the tank

generally there are the pulsing and non pulsing one.
and then theres the white tip and brown tip ones i think.

i love the pulsing red sea xenia. they are not too expensive. enjoy watching them pulse is a joy =]

I have the palm palm xenia and the red sea pulsing xenia in my tank with an Octopus 150 skimmer on my 55 gallon tank and my xenia still grows fast. When I didn't have my skimmer, my xenia grew much faster.

well all those rumors about xenia growing better in "dirty" tanks are probably true But it IS a sort of "natural filter" so maybe since your skimmer is taking everything out, there's nothing for it to filter out for food or whatever?

I dont know if this will help, but here is about 5 month difference between when I put the xenia in and just a couple weeks ago.

Xenia was the first coral I put into my tank. Personally I love it and want it to spread even more.

The kind of xenia I have is very white with a very light shade of pink. And very "feathery" kind of polyps.

I've read xenia need good iodine levels... so those that don't supplement or over skimm might be on the miss side of "hit or miss"

i dont run a skimmer or dose anything and the stuff grows way too fast for me Trying to get rid of it all this weekend in fact except for a small piece that is going along the top of my tank.
