Xenia: Weed Porportions vs. Failure to Thrive

toddrtrex, that is awesome

Thanks. The girlfriend likes it alot more than I do. ;)

That's yours?! I saw it on a reef pinterest board and fell in love--it's so, so pretty!

Yep --- do you have a link for that?

Here is a poor (( cell phone )) video -- no music, and I didn't edit it.

In my old tank xenia was the only thing that would grow good. I had green star polyps, mushrooms, zoas and they all barely grew after years while the xenia spread throughout the entire tank.

Xenia did well in my softie tank, low lighting, PO4 was around .5 and nitrates 20-30. That tank had excellent soft coral growth in general.

I can't get it to grow to save my life! My tank params are as steady as can be and I don't have a clue why it won't grow but it just won't thrive in my tank.I got lps and sps in my tank that are perfect and xenia won't grow lol

A week and a half ago, I bought a frag of this stuff online and it arrived DOA. I thought might as well as put the small piece of live rock in my tank, the more the merrier! Today the live rock has a piece of Xenia about half an inch across with about 5 hands all pulsing. I do 2 water changes a month, feed every other day a little food for my clowns, my salinity can fluctuate between 1.025 and 1.028 before I topup. I have a refuge with some algae growing in it and Copepods. I have a DIY carbon reactor and also some carbon in a bag in my refuge. My temp is at 26 Celsius. I just switched from tap water with a Tds of 46. I have now been using RO/DI to help combat my serious cyano problem. Flow is relatively good and lighting is 2 18w t8's one 6500k the other actinic. I don't test parameters anymore. My other corals are 2 Toadstools and a anemone. This tank was only setup on Christmas Day 2012.

I didn't read the entire post but if your striving to keep phospates low by running GFO and if your fish load is low and you don't feed often, your Zenia is being starved of phospates. There are many reports of Zenia melting away after starting the use of GFO and it's been my own experience too. They DO thrive in sloppy areas and even somewhat polluted areas of the ocean. Relax your phosphate reducing regiment and the zenia will grow and if you have enough of it, it will keep nuisance algae at bay that would otherwise take off.

Super awesome tank! Love the action in the video! Makes me excited to start a softie tank - SPS be damned! ;)

Toddrtrex that Blenny is awesome! Who's watching whom.

I used Xenia as a nutrient export and sold off pieces to my LFS. I kept it in my sump on small pieces of live rock. I noticed best results when using lugol's solution and full spectrum lighting.
