Xrod 280 gallon living room peninsula

"That's what I've heard. Besides pH what other benefits you think?"

Well I can't think of a whole ton off the top of my head right now, but the ease of maintenance I think is going to be very good, no tight confined spaces underneath the tank. I have be aggravated many of times with working in tight spaces with a glass box :headwalls:. If you need to expand/go larger with a skimmer or other equipment you would have space. If you had to insulate or cover the sump (due to extreme temps) you could always maybe go with one of those polyethylene/plastic storage sheds available at lowes or hd. So I think the extra flexibility is mainly it. I have seen some people route the plumbing into an outdoor shed which can be very cost friendly for a "fish room" instead of adding it into the house or tearing something apart.

Some August updates

Some August updates

Things always take more time than one plans them for right? Well here are some updates: Started installing the cabinetry for the tank. Here is my daughter thinking it was a picture of her. Its always about her :inlove:

Here is the cabinetry semi finished, and when i say semifinished i mean i think some things are missing, but i do like the overall look:

As you can see i forgot to paint the top part white or place an extra wooden part on top. You can also see to much light on the top part of the doors, because originally it was made thinking the sump would go there so it could breathe and guess what, i forgot to tell the guys that sump would go outside and to closen a bit the gap. So i think ill get that fixed. As you can see the 2nd door has a quick fix to see how it would look with a small piece of wood inside the top part. Looks good to me, so probably will do that with all doors.

Anyway. Here is another shot of the tank being filled with tap water to make final tests after piping all of the PVC.

Got to do something about the long return pipe that swivels and swoops and moves so it wont dance around much.

Its show time

Its show time

So finally put in some sand and rock. Freshly placed in thats why its cloudly. :)

It is being mini cycled with natural seawater gotten from 30 nautical miles from shore. Lets see how it goes...

As you can see I left an empty space for clams zoas and whatever other sand corals need :)

What you think of this distribution and the empty space in sand. Too big? enough, wouldnt do it?

Giving aquascape advice is tough since aesthetics are such a personal thing, but I prefer two or more island type structures that would leave less open space at the end. How is the sump/return running? How quiet are the drains.

Not sure if it was addressed, I love the idea, but have a couple of questions:

Not sure where you are from, but what do you have planned for:

1. Rain / Storms
2. Those really hot days and the heat
3. Those really cold days and the cold

(in regards to the sump location)

Thanks I'll consider that when adding the rest of the rock. 150 por d's have gone in. Still putting in 100 more so maybe I'll change the final aqua scaping.

Placed a durso standpipe to it and I'd did get more quite but still have not gotten used to the drain sounds

I live in Guatemala. Known as the land of the eternal spring :) so it never gets to cold and never to hot. But of course in these days anything could happen, so I got to eheim 150 watts for redundancy but to be honest they are having a hard time keeping up the temp. Don't know what I should have got knowing the size of the tank, sump and knowing it is outside. It does get cold sometimes. It never gets to hot. My nano has never gott n past 82 degrees. As to rain and storms, the sump does have a small roof it is not totally uncovered. Direct sun does hit it like 2 hours but I am thinking of maybe just hanging a sort of plastic curtain. Any thoughts.

Have you tried running the standpipe as a full siphon controlled by a gate valve? With the gate valve you can match the flow of the siphon drain with the return and it should be silent. Do a search of the Herbie method, you should be able to get rid of the drain sounds entirely.

I did read about the herbie. Problem is i only got 1 drain and if you read my full thread from the begining, youll notice it is practically impossible for me to add another one. And just 1 drain full siphoning is pretty dangrrous ha?

A couple of fixes to cabinetry

A couple of fixes to cabinetry

Ok here is what ill be looking at from now on everytime i sit in the living room or dining room :)

august24.jpg

as you can see i minimized the spaces in the area above the doors. I also added a nice white frame to the top of the Tank. Changes drastically the look of it! :)

Also added 2 loc-line modular hoses for the returns so i can aim them later on.

Just measured 8 days after filling it up. Ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 0. Cant beat Natural sea water!
