just a quick question...

what happens to your tank during the 'break in' period? if it is breaking in and not really skimming anything for a week or more, doesnt your water quality go south? just curious...

Anotehr split. YOur tank will and should not go south in 2 weeks without a skimmer.

Just do your weekly water changes and you are golden

as kdblove said, just make sure you keep up on your weekly water changes and you should be fine thats a given you dont have tons of stuff dying and feeding whole fishes... ;)

But even then the water changes should help quite a bit...

Hey all. Got my msx-160 into service today, and it looks like it's going gangbusters. One small problem though (actually, rather a large one).

It's L O U D.

The sound is the pump rattling, but not against the sump or anything (can lift it (the skimmer) up so that it's not touching any thing on any side and it's the same). The pump IS running (like I said, it's producing, and well), the shipped air line has been replaced, everything is put together correctly, etc.

I can quiet it by slowing the air intake (ie, letting it suck air through a rag on top of the silencer, which of course increases water/decreases air), or by increasing air flow by blowing in the intake (a constant blowing JUST above what it's trying to pull).

The air intake piece in the pump is just flush with the inside (ie, not pushed all the way in).

Anybody have any ideas on this one? If it wasn't for the noise it'd be running perfectly. I've read most of the thread over the last couple weeks and don't remember anything of this nature.

Any information VERY appreciate, wife's not happy ; )

A: It may just need to break in to quiet down
B: Make sure the pump is not pushed in so far that it is rattling on the bottom of the skimmer. Mine was doing this and it was quite loud.

You may just have to trim down the mesh a bit as it is rubbing against something making all that racket. I can say mine was louder when I got it and now it is quiet as can be.

I had the same problem and re-meshing got the noise to an acceptable level. Still hums, but not as loud.

You may get lucky and all you may have to do is give it trim. Take your time when taking the pump apart, some have broken the ceramic shaft.

Alright guys, I have some good news to report. I got my msx 200 last week before I went out of town for memorial day. At first it was very loud and would not start. I trimmed down the mesh and it started up after a little fiddling around. I left it in a vinager bath and when I got home it was pretty quiet. I have it in my tank now and it is making some sweet bubbles. I did have to mesh with it a little to start but my I think this is going to kick some major butt! I was very skepitcal and didn't want to buy this but so far I think it will be well worth it! I will post some pics in a min.

I am looking for a skimmer for a 60g cube I am building. The sump will hold about 22g. the skimmer chamber will be12"Lx9"Wx 10.5"H. Do you think the msx 160 would be a good choice? Thanks Chris

ok here u go!

Wow another split!

clevengergl, that is some nasty SICK SICK stuff you have coming out of your skimmer. I bet if you fish around your sump you might find a diaper or two :D I can't believe you even stuck your hand in there...the things a Reefer would do do.

Tex, glad to see it fit just fine in your sump. C man, all that worrying for nothin : ).

Yea, clev's a sick guy! lol

LOL! Yeah, just couldn't resist,,,:D You should have seen my wife trying to hold down her lunch while she took the pic!

Couldn't be happier with the performance of this skimmer. I'm running a little wetter this week to see what it can pull, but I think I'm getting close to finding the sweet spot!!!

Oh, now I get it....the things a reefer would DO DO!!!

ROTFLMAO

But I assure you, neither myself or a baby diaper contributed in any way to the sludge in that skimmer. That's 100% home-skimmed fish poop...;)

I apologize if this was already mentioned earlier in the thread, but I was wondering how this skimmer would compare to a modded (mesh mod and recirc) ASM skimmer.

I have an ASM-G4X on my 330 and I'm thinking it just isn't doing enough. My ASM is mesh modded and I was thinking about doing the recirc mod, but wanted to know if anyone had run both an ASM and the MSX on the same tank.

Thanks!

Mike

Mike, i've ran the octo nw200 recirc on my tank before and it was modded to pull 32scfh. Its similar to the asm in size. The msx200 absolutely kills it imo. I've recirc'd it and its pulling 42-43scfh. The msx was outskimming the octo recirc as an in sump model, so now it really puts a hurtin on it.

If you look at the last page on the last split jgillard had a g3 and msx 200 he said the msx ate it up. A friend of mine has a g6 and i say the msx 250 mercs it, he agrees.. We havent ran them side by side yet cause my sumps not big enough and im just not willing to part with my msx yet:) hes gonna order a 250 or 300with his stimulis check and run them side by side but we already no whats gonna happen.

Looks like I might have a new skimmer to save for then!

What about the sizing of the skimmer (to the tank)? I have a 330g (total system volume about 375g) tank with ~20 fish. The largest three being a Purple Tang, Foxface and a Melanarus Wrasse. The other are small (midas blenny, green reef chromis, etc). What would be the best size to get, assuming that sump space isn't an issue?
