This is my first fish. Got it and a shrimp 2 weeks ago.

I have yet to see the ungrateful dumb yellow clown goby eat. what do they eat? i have pellets and flakes.

today i watched ycg try to eat something of the rock and get stung haha! Is it possible its eating hitchhikers? i had some starfish things i havent seen in awhile... or is it slowly starving to death?? Never eats any food

Mine eats mysis shrimp and flakes fine. But it never eats much. If you watched it eat, you'd think it should've starved by now. But it's grown quite fat and happy in my tank over many years.

I've always assumed it's nibbling on copepods during the day, but I've never witnessed it. Sounds like that's what yours was doing.

You'll know it if it's starving... its belly will start to look sunken in. You might want to try some finely chopped mysis shrimp if you think it's not getting enough to each. Pellets are probably too big for it.

I'd try some frozen mysis or other frozen marine food, I've heard they can sometimes be picky eaters though personally the two I've had were slobs that would eat anything frozen, flake, pellet, and pecked at display macroalgae.

they need to be fed very often or they will starve. tiny pieces of frozen or crushed flake. will also accept live black worms. if you have a large tank with tons of pods they could live off that.

ok cool thanks for the replies, i will go get some frozen shrimp tomorrow. Gonna go to the store and probably get some snails, maybe another fish. YCG is too shy. hopefully he chows down the new food.

i dont have any CUC yet. theres bunch of what i think is diatom algae in my tank right now, the live rock has a bunch of red and purple algae growing too. kinda neat huh

i would just take the ycg back and get something easy like a 2" tank raised occellaris clownfish that is already eating.

only get fish from good stores with healthy fish. the fish should be fat or at least not skinny. their bellies should be full which means they are eating well. ask them to feed them frozen food in front of you. if the fish doesn't eat with gusto till it's belly is fat then try another fish. it's much better to buy a healthy fish than get the exact fish you want that's not 100% healthy. the sick fish will end up starving and dying and release disease into your tank infecting your tank for a couple months. ask if the fish is peaceful. and even better if you can look up the fish yourself and do some research.

Got a clown and some snails along with some mysis.

The clown really helped ycg be less shy and ycg loves the mysis!

My tank seems to be doing good. Thanks for the advice!

I mix up frozen Mysis and brine shrimp with some store bought squid, silver side, and pygmy shrimp then toss in some dried nori sheets to a processor. My Clown Goby goes nuts over it. I also have a very well developed 5gal sump packed with pods so the little guy goes nuts on those as well.
