yellow jawfish question

Do the yellow jawfish NEED a dsb in the tank or would some live rock rubble in the form of a "Cave" be ok?

I saw one of these guys at my lfs and he kept hanging around these couple of live rock rubble pieces and darting in andoutof them.

Is this just temp. housing for the jawfish in the lfs or could i do that in my tank?

i plan on having about 1 inch of sand and would love to have one of these guys.

Any thoughts would be helpful thanks

I think it would be happiest in a dsb. My sandbed is only about 1", but I've laid a big flat piece of rock on the bottom just for the jawfish. Once in the tank, it immediately found that cave between the rock and the sand and has made it his home. Again, this is a big flat rock on the sand, so he can dig all he wants beneath it without fear of it caving in on him.

HI

If the sandbed is too fine, they have problems making stable burrows. I have added a few handful of coarse (up to 1") pieces, broken shells etc. They pick the pieces one by one and integrate them into their burrows, great to watch. My sandbed is ca. 4".
If you get these fishes, please take more than one. I have 4 in my 110 and they all live happily in one corner of ca. 18 x12". Sexing is impossible but they are absolutely not aggressive, so you can add any number without worries.

Best wishes

Jens

Mine did fine in a 1" send bed, but I also added ruble and shells and everything else, they really need both to make a happy home. I can tell you that they are the coolest fish to own!!!
