Yellow Squam, Blue Spots

I agree there is no comparison. The reef science clam looks a LOT nicer. IMO, worth every penny.

what's the difference in lighting between the two places?...a lot more spots on the exoticreefs clam, but i like the reefscience clam you picked up

the reefscience one will turn almost solid brown as it gets older. i have one that was *exactly* like it back when i got it. i think it's in my gallery.

i like the exotic reefs one better.

edit: yup, it's in my gallery, but it's an old picture. it really is almost solid brown now.

Manderx, the one titled Squamosa? All your others are Maximas so I assume so. Did you have the sky blue spots on yours when it was smaller also? Also is that mantis in your tank?

Projectreef got me 6 ultra maximas in different shades or blue, green and purple - I was hoping to add a yellow. Bummer if they don't hold their color as they age. I do seem to remember some yellowish larger clams on dives in Indonesia through Thailand.

I just got this one from RS and it is as nice as the pic

Also order a blue spot (for someone else) it is also very nice like the picture

I have a bluespot that is like 7" at what point did yours start to lose its spots?

Tagging along to find out when the blue spots will disappear. I wonder if the yellow and orange squas loss their colors as they age, like gigas.

This is from about a year ago. The blue spots have actually become larger, although some have turned green around the edges.

the blue spots are still there, just the brown regions overtook most of the yellow. every tank is different. maybe it'll stay yellow in yours.

i have seen some stay yellow, but they were completely different patterns. they were striped, like mustang's

edit: i just added some links to older pics of my clam in my gallery under the comments for the squammy pic.

Clam question

Clam question

I am interested in getting my first clam. I have 4x55 watt PC right now and waiting for the delivery of a 4x96watt Hamilton retro. I hope to be able to keep one of my 110watt strip PC with the Hamilton retro. My Calcium has been at 450 for some time. I would be interested in a Durasa or a Squamosa, Squamosa seem to have better colour variation. Are the green or blue Squam harder to keep or require more lighting. Do I have enough lighting for a clam? How often would I have to dose Calcium in a 90gal?

Thanks

Marcus

Marcus,

My squamosa seems to like a lot of light, it's under a 400 watt XM20k bulb at the bottom of a 24" deep tank and it stays spread out during the day like it wants more light. That said, people do have success with squamosa's with less light than would be required for a maxima or crocea for example. As far as maintaning your calcium levels, you also should keep up your alkalinity and keep a steady PH. If you don't keep your alkalinity >= to NSW levels clams can't build there shells. Squamosa's grow quick. The clam pictured in my post above has grown from 5" to 11" in about a year. Randy in the chemistry forum has written some good articles on how to maintain calcium and alkalinity.

Wow, six inch growth in one year! Thanks for the reply, I will check out the articles you mentioned.

Thanks again
