yellow tang addition

I recently had a tank crash in my 135 reef tank. I procrastinated on upgrading my skimmer for too long and with my heavy bioload the water changes just werent enough apparently. I lot most of my fish and half of my corals :( I was able to save my yellow tang, lawn mower blenny and yellow belly blue hippo. I had no choice but to put them in one of my 46 gallon bowfront tank until my new skimmer came in. I am planning on putting them back in my display tank this weekend now that all my perimeters are back to normal and stable.

Originally my yellow tang was the last fish put in my tank because of their agressive nature. I dont plan on adding any additional tangs but I do plan on adding some anthias, wrasse, chromis.etc .I am going to go with mainly smaller fish this time.

Will i be ok to add the yellow tang before all of my other fish this time or do I need to wait until I have finished stocking the main tank. She is about 3 inches, color good, eating good very healthy so the small tank transition hasnt been too stressful for her.

Thanks in advance for your input everyone.

Sorry to hear about your meltdown. I am a huge fan of protein skimming, infact I am making a new DIY beckett 48" tall, now I have to upgrade my pump, sh!t.

My yellow tang was one of the first fish that I added and he never showed any aggression towards any other fish I added after that which include (Blue Hippo, flame angel, queen angel, Neon wrasse, ringtail tang). He was larger than all the other fish that I added as well. The only time his panties wound up in a bunch was when he saw his reflection in the tank wall and he would go NUTS, but showed no aggression towards any of the fish. And he only flipped out maybe once a week.

But as always the disclaimer is "depends on the fish", which is what is the personality of your yellow?

yeah I knew from the beginning I needed a bigger skimmer but just didn't have the extra $. I had a aqua c urchin that came with my used setup. Of course the LFS raved on it. Well the skimmer was cheaper than everything I lost. Hard and sad lesson learned but my new skimmer should handle anything I throw at it. Got a mrc MR-2R recirculating skimmer and a pan world pump rated for 450 gallon tank should easily handle my 135.

My yellow tang has always been a little skiddish. I havent really had any problems with her except for the mimic tang i had :( and my kole tang but again I added her last to my tank so had no comparison to go by as far as how she might have acted differently. Good to know she should be ok. I just hate to keep her in the 46g while I restock. I just know how difficult anthias can be so they were my main concern.

Thanks for the feedback!

Not a problem, yeah your mr2r should be more than enough. How big is the yellow, if it is closing in on 4-5", I would go ahead and put it in the display tank. You can always rearraign the rocks if needed when you introduce another tang. But I dont think that you should have any aggression problems with anthias. They arent exactly what your yellow would consider a threat.

I guess she is about 4" so probably best to go ahead and add her.. well Tanga and Goliath are going to be soooo happy.

I would love to have another mimic tang but they are hard to find. My mimic was one of my favorites I lost. I haven't seen one on Liveaquaria since I got my last one though.

Okay I tell you what try reefhotspot.com they have a 3-5" mimic for $60. They have great livestock and excellent customer service. Also order over $225 and shipping is free. I sound like a sale person, seriously I only do buisness with them and liveaquaria for both reasosn.

I have never tried them but will have to give them a shot. Was it in their WYSIWYG section? I didnt see it. I have never strayed from the divers den or live aquaria because of their guarantee and healthy livestock but I have looked at the reefhotspot many times just afraid to try them.

Right now I have a pretty good credit from liveaquaria. They sent me a shipment of fish and forgot the heatpack in freezing weather a while back. You can imagine what happened to my beautiful fish and shrimp (dang sounds like a seafood platter  Never happened before and not likely would happen again but I was po'd to say the least.

That would set me off as well. Reefhotspot I believe has a 14 day guarantee on there fish. Their WYSIWYG I think is only corals and inverts. But I have ordered numerous fish from them and they have shipped out great fish, eating extremely well (almost aggressively) with no disease. Just give them a call and ask them some questions, that is how I chose to use them. I would rank them right beside liveaquaria.

I also see you updated your profile to include your new skimmer. Now I have a beckett and was wondering if my iwaki 55 would power both becketts adaquately (never tried only used 1)?

I am using the pan world 55 which i think is the equivelant of yours. It should be just the right size to really pull out all the junk. The pan world works great on mine.
