bathing in furan. Can furan be done orally through food? if so what are the instructions? box only says how to apply to tank water.
would you say the infection is still there? It does look like the meds have been helping. how much longer should I keep him in qt? He has hlle as well. My understanding is that hlle is more to do with stress and nutrition I don't assume that will be solved in a 20g qt tank so I'm just wondering when I should put him in DT.

Aw dude he looks 100x better!
His fins are better, his color is better, he has a little more weight on him, the redness is about half what it was.
The HLLE will never improve, he will always have that look, what's important is it doesn't worsen and it doesn't look like it is.
Just keep going.
The instructions say 4 doses, so I would do as the directions say and then observe him for a while. If it gets better you may not need to re dose, but if it doesnt he may need a second round of treatment.
So finish up per the instructions and keep him in QT under observation. Give him a couple more weeks and see if it gets better. Keep feeding him well and keep his immune system up.

I've now done 4 treatments and the redness has completely disappeared however I still see a red tint on the mouth and on the lateral line near his mouth and eyes. not sure if this is part of hlle or the infection. do another round or is this part of hlle?

I don't think HLLE is typically red, if there is still some redness it's likely the infection is still there. However, I don't want to overdose him. Nitrofurans haven't been used since the early nineties since the FDA classified them as a carcinogen, and can cause severe side effects when overdosed like seizures. So I would be hesitant on over doing it.
My suggestion at this point is to run some carbon, do a few water changes and soak the rest of the med up. Give him a minimum of 4 weeks in observation and see if the redness completely resolves. I would take pics daily so you can tell if the spot is getting larger or smaller. If it stars getting worse, or doesn't resolve in the first week, I would restart therapy. Even if the spot improves this week and goes away, I would still watch it intently for the next 4 weeks to make sure it does not return. Typical rebound recolonization times can be delayed (at least with people) by the presence of the antibiotic itself, so it can take quite a while for the infection to flare up again if it's going to. I would think that 4 weeks being asymptomatic would put you in the clear.

We will cross this bridge when we get there, but if nitrofurans don't work we may have to change weapons here, and pick a gram spectrum to work in. Either an aminoglycoside (kanamycin) or even a floroquinolone (if you can even get one for fish). It might be an organism resistant to what we are hitting it with.
