Hmm.. Unusual flow pattern?
Thats what I heard.
Some are photosynthetic. Those I presume can be kept. The non-photo ones I think are impossible to keep. Worse then Dendronepthya. I tried to keep a photosynthetic one twice now and failed with both of them. Now the shipping was iffy on them so I blame the shipper. Since there was air in the bag I'm pretty sure they were exposed.
I would try to find out where they came from and how deep. If you can find out they grew in shallow water in the open then chances are they are photosynthetic so I would give it a try. The pictures of them are beautiful.
Not quite. There are some non-photo barrel sponges that are quite easy to keep. I can think of a couple right off hand, one of which grows like a weed (black barrel sponge).
I would really stay away from making any sweeping generalizations when it comes to these (or any) sponges. After all, we can't positively identify them for the most part, and they are so incredibly diverse. I'd say that it is worth a shot. If you can get any info about where they came from and under what conditions they were collected, that would probably be the best start for trying to keep them.
Black "tube" sponge is hardly a barrel sponge and may in fact be photosynthetic. Not sure I was making any "sweeping generalizations". I believe I was sharing my EXPERIENCE with barrel sponges which is what he asked for. As for the rest you are saying the same thing I did.
