Yet another flow question.

So I feel like Im finaly up to the challenge of keeping a few SPS corals. I see that most of them like medium to high flow. Now this seems like a pretty controversial subject. I have seen people say to have 65x your total water volume in your tank and this just seems absurd to me. On the other end of it I have seen people say like 4x flow and this doesnt seem like it would do anything. What is your guys imput on this? I am thinking about 10x-14x flow should be sufficient.

I keep a 40g mixed reef with polyps, softies, lps, and sps. If you are doing a predominantly sps tank then yes, vigorous flow is a must. I would aim for 40x flow or more. For my mixed tank I have 30x turnover. These high flow rates seem crazy but all depends on what type of flow you have. Tunze prop-style powerheads deliver a wide, gentle flow pattern at high gph flow rates. Compared to the laminar flow of maxi-jets and similar. A bare minimum for flow in any tank is 20x, ime. All is dependant on what corals you are planning on keeping. ;)

drummereef: do you have a tank thread anywhere? I'm trying to plan out my 40br, and I'd like to see what you've accomplished with that flow.

I don't. My 40g has been set up long before I knew about Reef Central, since 96ish. :) Obviously the tank has been through many changes as trends in the reef hobby changed. Right now I have two Tunze Nanostream 6025 pumps in the tank for flow. It gives me a little more than 30x turnover which seems to suite all my corals just fine. I did a review on the Nanostreams a little while back (link below). I had a short thread on my tank a little while back as well (link below). ;)
