You frequently hear people blame hermits...

I have hermits AND snails, and snails are the troublemakers. I just finished rescuing a turbo who'd crawled out to the end of the return nozzle and then gotten blasted off, to fall into the rockwork into a nook EXACTLY his size and get stuck. So here am I, balanced on a ladder with the long end of a net to get this cussed snail out of his predicament before he starves to death. I'd sworn all day I have better things to do, but hey, it's a life. It's not the dollar fifty he cost. it's a life. So I fished him out. Have either of them cleaned what I wanted them to clean? Nay. They'd rather clean the perfectly ok back of the tank.

We're not even mentioning the fact that strombus grazer shells exactly fit the dimple of the impeller of an Iwaki pump.

I have hermits that have been with me for more than five years, and one I think may be ten, and never a shred of trouble from them. I give them plenty of shells of gradated sizes, and they've never hurt a thing. Snails plot to get stuck or to flip over or do things to demise themselves, and once they get to smelling dead, you betcha the hermits are on the job to clean up.

So when you ask me, who's the problem? I just spent ten irretrievable minutes of my life rescuing a snail I've only had for a week.

I must have been thinking of the hermits because I dreamed I was somewhere and I spotted a bunch of shells so I was going to go out and try to collect some bigger ones for my blue legs. And wherever I was walking, there were baby bunnies nested in the sand. All over, lots of bunnies. I have weird dreams.

Really?? That's odd - I have red legged and blue legged hermits (about 15 in all) and every time I order a cleaner package (from Reef Cleaners - they're pretty good) the dwarf and full sized Ceriths dwindle down to only a handful after four or five weeks - and my hermits keep thriving and seem happy as larks! And I order empty shells as part of the cleaner package too! I'm on my FOURTH cleaner package now! :sad2:
Hmmmm.....don't know what's going on but my little hermit darlings always look like cats who swallowed canaries!!! LOL!

HAHAHA..I Right now have a Huge Chestnut turbo snail inside my external over flow box.. I Have to shut off the return pump and remove the U Pipes to get it out due to how i have them configured and the water level in there.. The issue is The Snail is Larger then the Holes in the back of the tank from the internal over flow. I have no idea how it got back there.Crabs however climb other the top rim of the tank to get back there Eat the go back to the tank..

I have snails Turn upside down fall off rocks into cracks and even get stuck from suction on wave pumps.. Crabs knock small corals off rocks and Kill snails just to be killing them. I have watched it time and time again..
In my opinion they are both a EQUAL BUT necessary pain in the AHH HUMM Tank .. yea tank is the word i was looking for..

I might just leave the turbo snail in the over flow box. but its just large enough that it could block one of the Drain pipes in the middle of the night and get me out of bed from gurgling of the EMERGENCY Being in use...

i couldn't care about the hermits or snails in my tank. i don't really give much thought to it either, i just bought 10 or each snail i wanted and 10 hermits for my 265 and didn't think about them again. They are there to do a job if they die i will replenish them.
