youngreef180's 215 in wall build thread

I would love to help get something like that together. I will test par again and keep more detailed log as to the results I find. I need to try to edit a full tank shot and apply the par numbers to the pic where they were taken, but not real sure how to do that yet. Reflectors and ballast used could also be some usefull info to have.

Sounds grat, try to measure near corals that you have, noting PAR level and growth (good, great, etc.). Try to get the maximum level you can with the meter, it's pretty sensitive to the direction you point it, and probably more so with halides as a point source of light. That way maybe we can get a decent list of corals and levels compiled to help let us all better know what we need for success. And yes, what bulbs, reflectors, ballast and even tank dimensions (depth of the coral and measurement) would be helpful since it will all play into someone being able to pick what type of lighting they will need for their tank related to the corals they want to keep and the depth they want to keep them at.

I almost forgot one of my new favorites I picked up a little while back from oddballs.

I can't remember, I think I did Electric last time, they say on their web site it will read halides 2% low then, versus 6% high if on Sun setting. And since we probably all tend toward the higher K colors, I'd think that Electric may be best, though as long as we all use the same it probably doesn't make much difference.

I know I probably asked you this awhile back at the store. What camera are you shooting with now?

I borrowed a Cannon powershot sx100is from Cody. Its a nice camera but even in full manual mode if you zoom very far at all it wont auto or manual focus. I sent my Kodak p712 for the second time to get get fixed for a repeat problem that was supposedly fixed and they wont cover the work. So its just sitting somewhere in IL. lol

The pics look good. Even if it was a P&S camera.
I still have lots of issues when trying to take pics in the back of the tank. I really do need to get a macro lens, but there are too many other things that has to come first.

Thanks yeldarbj and Jerrod Lee

Well my new calcium reactor came in and it's a beast. The old one wasn't cutting it anymore plus I broke one of the fittings. Whats funny is I think these are both rated for 400 gallons but the new octopus reactor holds nearly 5 times the media telling me my old Korallin is severly overrated.

I really like this new one its built like a tank and has a huge recirculating pump and all of the fittings are 1/4 inch jg fitting so hook up is was a breeze. It should be able to keep up with this new tanks demands much better. My favorite feature is the screw off lids making toping off with fresh media not such a big chore plus it has a ph probe holder something my old one didnt have. The last big plus for me was the price. So far I like it as much as a geo and its under half the price of a similar geo model.

I hope this helps anyone who was in the same situation as me needing a larger calcium reactor but not wanting to shell out over $500 when you can get this one for $275 and so far seems to be well worth that.

It's been awhile since I posted:(. Summers make it so hard for me to keep up with everything. Almost every day it seems like there is something else pulling me away from doing all the fun stuff in the hobby like making the club meetings and posting more on here. I plan on trying to do a little better from here out, but i guess we'll see since August's schedule looks just as busy with my sons football practices starting next week. I have managed to keep up with all the necessities like water changes and the tank is doing very well with growth rates the best I have ever seen. I guess that says something about all the work and planning that went into it this past winter is doing what its suppose to. The great growth rates are probably due mostly to the new calcium reactor it is simply much more efficient and well built then the previous model I was using.

Here is a video to show a little bit of what has been going on. The quality is not the best.

This is with the coralvue metal halide ballast turned up 75%

This is with the coralvue ballast dimmed all the way down

Last week I decided to go ahead and add some vho actinics to my metal halide setup. It turned out pretty good for no more than I had to do. I simply added some 1x4 boxes to each end of the main 1x8 and attached the endcaps to those.

Nice work...

Nice work...

The tank looks great - the coral are stunning, and I love the trigger.

How's that Reef Octopus CA Reactor working for you? Do you still like it? Is it easy to dial in?

Lightsluvr thank you for the nice words. The calcium reactor has been awesome granted I only have the previous one to compare it with but its night and day. The octopus uses half the co2 to come up with the same alk number in the efluent or outgoing water and I have only made one initial adjustment since installing and it keeps the calk and alk dead on. Have you seen the huge one that Reef octopus is making now its a monster I think it holds nearly a five gallon bucket worth of media to bad it cost a small fortune.

Okay I have a awesome friend that let me borrow his Nikkon D80 with a macro lens and this thing is bad to the bone ! I sure know what Im putting on my wish list but its not gonna happen anytime soon in this economy.

Here some pics that I took of a few corals. Imagine if I knew what I was doing. Oh and none of these pics were doctored just staight from the camera to photobucket.
