Your cleanup crew

What does your cleanup crew consist of and how many of each. I’m looking at packages and man do they seem huge. For instance 45 Astraea Turbo Snails snails, 45 Dwarf Blue Leg Hermits, 45 Scarlet Reef Hermits and many more inverts, all this for a 90. Seems like my tank would be over run by cleanup crew lol.

I think they put those kind of numbers together based off assuming people are going with MH and VHO in a 12 hr photo cycle...

It's also nice to have extra crew members for the refugium, and later for the frag system:) if food is slim in the tank just target feed

I am not even sure anymore what is in there, other than a few red leg hermits, a few electric blue legs, 25 to 30 Narsisus snails, 8 to 10 big mexican turbos, a tuxedo urchin, a sand sifting star, and a sea slug. Ok...so maybe I remember some of what is in there.

I think it's always good to have extra as my crabs seem to like to kill my snails,so bring on the extras!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks mickela I was taking a drink of water and almost spit it out when I burst out laughing!!

It all depends on the intended function of each critter. Some are there to eat algae on the glass, some are there to clean the sand of detritus, some are there to clean the algae in the sand bed. So how many of each depends on overlap. You wouldn't want 30 each of 4 different algae eaters and no detritus or scavengers.

I am one for starting small and adding if they aren't doing the job. That allows me to decide which functions needs to be supplemented, it also prevents loss due to starvation if you have too many of one particular type. I would rather add to achieve balance rather then let living things die.

I started with a TOTAL of about 100 critter in my 90. Astreas, Nerites, Hermits, Nassarius, Trochus, Ceriths. Then added a few larger things like a Fighting Conch and a Sally Lightfoot Crab. I will definatlet be adding some more Trochus and Nerite snails. These seem to be the best glass workers and can right themselves when the fall.

FYI, We did a bulk order from reeftopia.com a month or so ago and I was happy with the mix of things we got. Even if you aren't buying bulk, the prices aren't horrible. Premiumaquatics also has a nice selection and they will ship 2 day ground to us, I have had success with them also.

Dave if you are starting your tank fresh, I wouldnt get one of those giant packages. You wont have enough algae to keep them fed, and they may starve. I would go with a package for a smaller sized tank and then add if necessary

Adam I never tore my tank down completely and I let the algae get a little out of control so I’m sure there is enough to eat lol. But I do see your point about new tanks and preassembled packs. Nebes might not know that about them. I think I will just add a little at a time. Thanks daveverdo for the info it will come in handy when I decide to purchase.
