Not to worry, the stoners... erm... indoor hydroponic gardeners, have come up with a solution called liquid cooled lighting, where they use a housing around the bulb cool HPS bulbs(gas discharge lamps just like MH, and even come in many of the same bulb/socket sizes... Don't use them for reefing though, color from them is way too red). Apparently doing this cuts down considerably the amount of heat transmitted onto whatever you are lighting.
Unfortunately, it looks to be pricey, and if you're running a large wattage MH, you may have to run a chiller on your bulb. I could work some formulas to show how much chilling you'd need for each bulb, but I doubt any of you(or even me for that matter) wants to see a bunch of thermodynamics on a Saturday afternoon.
Just thought it was kind of cool.
Oh, BTW. If you haven't ever heard of it before, and want to see the future of MH, Check out Luxim Lifi. Really cool stuff! The Demo I saw used a bulb the size of a tic tac(just a little glass capsule with no wires even) and let out more light than a street light...
