Is a Spearer better or a smasher better? In terms of coolness, taking care, expenses, size, life span, and can a semi-nub handle it?

I don't think there is an answer for your question. There is so much variety amongst all the various species that there is no one answer. L.maculata can live 15 years in the wild, but it just hangs out in its burrow so its kind of boring. P.cilliata has a much shorter life span but its more active and not nearly as large as the L.Mac. It is cool to watch a P.cilliata stalk a fish then snatch it out of the water column. Smashers are typically much more aggressive than the spearers, but P.cilliata is fairly aggressive twords food items. My G.chiagra is incredibly aggressive to food, but that is the only resaon he will leave his burrow, while my G.grahperus is more active but not nearly as aggressive to food.
