yumas vs rics

Just by reading I have heard people say Yumas are hard to keep and the usually melt on people etc. and rics are a little bit easier.

I had a blue ric that melted away and I have this colony of yumas just doing great and splitting all the time. I assumed the whole colony was rics because they where growing and splitting so easily.

What kind of care do Yumas require ?

with the yumas I have, I kept moving them from MH to 96 watt PC and they been doing good. I wish they would hurry up and color up cause the pics I had posted here are not what they looked like when I first got them

Yumas are a type of ricordea. Yuma ricordea.

The other type you're talking about is florida ricordeas. I've had good luck with floridas but not very much with yumas, like many others.

The green yumas are the ones that spread like weeds.

The yumas that tend to melt on you, of course, are the really awesome pretty pink ones. The more hot pink, red, they are, the more likely they'll go south sooner or later. That unfortunately is the rule of thumb.

The ones I have are multi colored mostly purple and green. they have been doing great, I was just reading about them do you think some yumas melt/die because of skimmers ? it says they filter feed and when they where in my ten gallon under the 96w PC I had no skimmer and barely did WC and they where in there for months at a time.

+1 to that

i have many different rics, i believe that the Florida's love dirty water. , but its not to say that cant thrive in a clean tank too. i have more more rare yumas in my sps tank and they are doing extremely well. but if i reverse the water yumas immediately begin to look sick Florida's stay the same. thats just my experience.

Ricordia Florida: Can handle very bright light. I have a few Florida rics can withstand more light than some of my SPS.

Ricordia Yuma: A lot more variation in this species. Some will do ok in medium lighting however many of them are from deeper water and need low light levels or they will bleach/burn.

thats my experience anyways.
hope that helps.

I have a very pretty pink-magenta yuma. It has been in my 90 under 250W MH on the bottom for over a year and it has produced 4 offspring.

those who know me knew that i was an avid yuma collector and had a very extensive collection...and i still consider them one of my fav corals to keep...

BUT...i have never been able to keep the exotic color ones (meaning two+ years) no matter what i did.

high light, low light, skimmerless, high skimming, low flow, high flow...it didnt matter...

florida rics for me are pretty much indestructible.

the only guy i know that has not only kept the exotic red/pick ones and have them thrive and reproduce is eric (fragfarmer). he has them under high'ish light and are in his sps tanks...go figure.

kerri i have had this one almost a year, it is pink and far from bleaching. this is in skimmer less tank.

here is one of your basic florida's

I Love Yumas for there color and diversity. they do tend to be a lil riskier compaired to the florida's. In the quest for color it is quiet obvious to let one know which ones i like.:D

Hey Richard the second pic looks kind of like mine before they lost color lol
I dont really care for Yumas or rics LMAO but the ones I have I like because they been living and splitting for me. I was bummed when my blue ric melted away I think it liked MH better that the PC's

here are some of my past yuma's:

Wow Bergzy ! I like the last pic the one at the bottom with pink and lavender.

Do you think it could have something to do with flow ? in my ten I had one 606 mini and set in the middle ?

berzy.. those are awesome.

joyce.. the floridas tend to have all consistant polyps like the green i posted. i killed my nice orange one some how otherwise i would have shown a better example. the others have bigger polyps on edges and such.

anyone have come more pics:D
