zebra eel

I am wondering about a zebra eel and long term tank placement and tankmates. From my research so far they don't seem to be big fish eaters, more of the cuc eaters. I am thinking of one about 15-18", qt in a 20l, place in a 40b with a zebra lion, then move to a 120 reef style tank. If needed or in place of the 120 I could put it in the 400 currently in the works.

Just wondering if anyone see a issue with my thought patter here?

Side not there is also the potential for a move to a 55, but now guarantee there.

current tank is covered in water spots at the lfs

I bit the bullet and got this zebra. It has ate a couple of frozen ghost shrimp so far, but not the larger shrimp or silversides.

plans are once it is eating is to go into a 40b, then when needed into a 120 if not a larger 400 if running at that point.

Mine will eat anything off of a feeding stick, but won't chase anything in the water column. Maybe he's just spoiled... :hmm3:

With the frozen ghosties it would eat off the stick and chase one through the water when it fell off. Regular shrimp or silversides on the stick aren't even looked at...yet. I understand them to eat when they want and not for a while if they don't want, just wanting to see a good eating response I guess.

IMO eels are the best buy strong immune system, wild to watch, and feed and most of low maintance IMO good luck and great looking eel btw.

129 on diver den for a 21" right now so a 120 in a lfs is resonable, and many shops in the pa/ nj area they are at least a 120 if not 150

I paid $75 for mine 4 years ago and I haven't seen one cheaper anywhere. $120 is about right.

My zebra eats frozen mysis shrimp and Rod's FO formula that I throw into the tank for everyone, and I feed it krill with a feeding stick once a week til it won't take anymore.

They can go 1-2 weeks without eating, is my understanding. This schedule seems to be working fine for mine. Zebra's are great eels--doesn't bother any of my fish.

Dont mean to change the subject but how is all of your experiences with zebra eels. Are the out in the open much? How would they compare to say a snowflake

Mine was mostly out in the open when it was hungry. If I saw it swimming around in the tank I knew it was feeding time. They are pretty reclusive - overall I think I saw my zebra more, but that is partly because it couldn't fit in the PVC tunnels I had in my tank like my snowflake could.

You guys are making me want a zebra. I didn't realize they were fish friendly.

What size tank is needed to house one?

edit----never mind, I just checked LA and 5 feet max size is pretty big.

My zebra eel is about 4ft now and 2-3" in diameter. He is very active at night and loves swimming between the rocks. He has never attacked any of my fishes or sea urchins. He will even befriend shrimps. He does however love scallops and black tiger shrimps. You need to make sure you keep your iodine/iodide stable. They are very prone to developing goiters.
