ZM's 200g build

The Kessils came in on Friday and I had them up and running that night. I pretty much used the setup from the BRS video for Apex and tweaked from there. I bought mine from Salty and they did not have the 90 degree adapters which is probably just as well. Still tweaking position but probably won't need them. I had a package of black Velcro straps and they worked out nice for organizing the wiring. To be honest my first thought when I powered them up was oh **** what did I do but they are growing on me. Despite each of the three supposedly good for a 24x24 area (my tank / 3) I'm leaning towards maybe adding a fourth but that's not w/o challenges. Left and right are pretty much centered over their areas but center is lower because of the large center overflow. That overflow along with bracing is a problem in mounting 4 equidistant across the tank. I think 5 would be the ideal amount of light and best mounting option but I'm not considering that right now. Anyway more to come on the subject but I'm not selling my MH/T5 fixture just yet. Some thoughts so far...

1) Biggest concern so far is shadowing and perceived less light.
2) No moonlight capability. They might be suitable if not for the lights turning off when they reach a power level of 14.
3) Many rate the shimmer as a plus but undecided on that as to there being too much shimmer.
4) As expected my actinically active corals are absolutely stunning under dawn and dusk periods of more blue light. I would say colors are better than even VHO actinic. My Ricordia, shrooms, zoas and other softies are looking better than ever. Even with SPS I'm liking the color of some even better under the LED's. Being my tank is pretty heavy on branching SPS varieties how they do will be my deciding factor on whether to keep or sell the lights.
5) Behavior wise only two things stand out. My large superman mushroom that has never done too well anywhere in my tank with MH has perked right up and its orange/cobalt blue colors are returning to full. My 3 RBTA's have been acting a bit weird and closing up more but seem ok.
6) I'm using a color ramp up to 90. I'm not terribly impressed with the daylight color especially at 100. 90 does seem to be about the best "daylight" color although not sure how those equate to actual color temps.
7) Equipment wise the only real criticism is the control cables are too short. Attached to a light, routed along gooseneck, across tank and up next gooseneck to 2nd light and 6ft is on the short side. There is just enough cable that it runs the span just across the top edge of the tank. Not too bad but 7' would have been the ideal length and completely hidden the cables. Not enough to pay $40 for two extension cables though. Because of the location I happen to have my Apex in and the way I placed the lights the 6ft light/apex cable was just barely enough.
8) The 360WE is supposed to be 15% brighter. Going back to my comment about perceived lack of light... if I keep these I suspect I will end up running at 90-100% power after acclimation. Even for acclimation I'm not comfortable with going less than my current ramped 70% max power setting.
9) The fish were a little freaked out probably from the shimmer and shadows but have adapted. If anything the fish colors are less stark under the LED's due to a lack of constant diffused light.

8 months since startup so about 7 months since I started adding stock and about 6-6.5 since bit with acro bug. This is the left 1/3 of my tank under Kessils at 70 power 90 color and flash. This is where the scavengers congregate when they think they are going to get fed. Some of the recently transplanted frags in the background. I think the orange digitata and the red planet were my first two acro's. Some much newer than others but all started out .5 - 1.5" frags. Pretty happy with growth overall. As my wife pointed out now that the MH monstrosity is gone with easier tank access maybe I can clean up some of the coralline on the back and the left side of the tank :hmm5:

This is probably the fastest grower in the tank. Only had this ORA frogspawn a little more than 5 months when it was a 1.5" frag . I can only hope my new ORA Ice tort does so well although said to be a slow grower.

Great looking tank. I didn't know you were in cfl. There's quite a few people over there(round ya) with some pretty badas$ tank. I just got a PB today and it's sweet.

Never fails... I go out to get a haircut and a few errands and there's always a fish store to stop by :lmao: Really was not intending to buy anything today but I got a pretty good deal on two small Anthias that impulse said I wanted.

I got a Parvostirus (Diadem) and a Tierra. Kind of small but they should blend into the school nicely. Both have very nice colors and markings.

Still more to come on the new lights but as of Friday I added two more for a total of 5 Kessil A360WE's and liking the setup a lot better in terms of better coverage/more perceivable light and less shadows. I'm running 2x on the left and right and 1 in center. The picture is w/o flash and the lights are currently at 80 color and 65% power. Still a little cleanup left from adding the two additional lights. I had the wires cleaner the first time. And despite getting down to 2 frag racks a few weeks ago I'm back to 3 again.

Wow that's stunning. Great job. I just went over to Orlando yesterday to grab some sps off another reefer. Who had a tank full of sps and mh/t5 but the pop with LEDs are crazy compare to them.

That's the one thing LED has always had over MH/T5 and even VHO actinic. That's one reason a lot of store displays have exaggerated led blue to make the corals really show color. That picture is pretty much my "daylight" setting and the colors are pretty good. During morning and night ramp times when the color is more blue the actinic colors are stunning. I like the full range but a lot of people don't like the "fake looking" black light look. It remains to be seen how the SPS do over time but I think with the additional light I've found my MH/T5 replacement.

Its a baby

Its a baby

RBTA number four last night. This one moved right away and attached to a nearby zoa colony rock so I was able to dangle it so it dropped off into a container. I moved it to the opposite end of the tank (it actually stayed where I put it over night) where eventually it will be home to another pair of clowns. Interestingly all three splits have come from the original but number two is probably close to splitting from shear size. They have been getting fed Mysis pretty regular.

My original went into an elongated hole on a rock and when it first split the two stayed in the same hole and have competed for space. The second split dropped off and attached to the same rock down below and I left it there. That competition for space probably creates some stress and created a RBTA factory. Of course the stress from the light change could have been a factor also. Now that I'm at 4 I will probably start selling or trading future splits. 4-5 is probably the most I want in my tank.

You shouldn't need to feed them. That might help reduce the number of babies.

BTW - Congrats, daddy! ;)

Yeah I usually follow that forum but I belong to FRAG. ORCA for being Orlando usually has meetings too far away on the west side.

Kinda of my problem being in port St. John. Lol I think there meeting for this month is at living ref which I haven't been to yet so thinking about making the trip and checking them out.
From the picture those daylight time looks great

Well still chugging along... I did grab a deal on a good sized maricultured tricolor and a pretty good sized chunk of montipora spongodes.

I did finally get a female bimaculatus Anthias to go with my male. Just the opposite I got a male tierra (resplendent) Anthias to go with my female. At some point I also got a Christmas Wrasse. I don't see adding much else Anthias except another tierra when I can get my hands on another.

Light wise I'm actually loving the switch to the LED Kessils. In a nutshell as good or better growth and color, less electricity and less heat. The only notable tradeoff in terms of electricity is the 800w heater does run more. Now that we have moved into high humidity and 90F+ weather very much appreciating less heat. The heater might run more but the heat from the MH is not there to impact an already struggling AC with 1200w of heat.

Tank wise not to many issues. Killing a few Aiptasia now and then and had some issues with red cyano for a while that's not yet completely eradicated.

I may revisit power heads again as the POS Maxspect Gyre is constantly breaking down. Already been through two sets of rotors and on the set I bought. When those are destroyed its likely going in the trash. Its stripped drive gears and bushings aside from the rotors. Right now augmenting with a Jebao powerhead because one side won't turn and I'll be damned if I can figure out why. I cannot give this overpriced junk a strong enough DO NOT BUY rating.

Was browsing last week and found a couple maricultured pieces I liked at DD. I almost didn't buy but then the next morning they had multicolored Angels back in stock. DD waited to the last minute after the package had already shipped to call me and say one piece was damaged and they were not shipping it. Of course that was a one of a kind dark green stylo. Anyway the Angel and a piece of maricultured purple showed up ok except the sps was totally browned out. One from CA and one box from WI and no cold pack in either package :thumbdown With the heat surprised either was alive. I had kind of sworn off DD/LA but decided to try once more. Lets just say the customer service was terrible and the lack of cold packs. Guess Petco is already taking it toll on LA/DD.

The sps is good size for the price but I guess it will be a while before I see if it is indeed purple. I have three other millipora's and was a little surprised at the form of this milli. While a nice multi-branched small colony the branches are very small in girth. Probably < half of my other pieces. Just not seen a milli like that before.

I was out on Saturday and hit up a local shop for some frozen food and brine. Of course they had a 20-25% off sale going on. I got my brine and hikari Mysis but snagged a very nice small carpenters wrasse and a black back wrasse (AKA china or pearl). Both excellent but the challenge will be getting the black back to eat frozen food as they are primarily pod hunters and forage constantly. The carpenters just eats like a pig from day one.

I went out on Sunday and got a few handpicked pieces of rock to mount more frags on. I got down to two frag racks again after some work. One has some newer stuff on it and the other is mostly new frags I have inadvertently created during all the mounting plus a few zoa frags that are about ready to be mounted.

My tank currently has a left and right rock wall and the center in front of the overflow was pretty much left empty as a protected area where I used to keep some frags and where all my Ricordia colonies live. Speaking of Ricordia my original 25 I mounted on four rocks are probably now 60+ polyps. Those colonies are going to get relocated and I am probably going to build up a rock structure there for more space for coral placement.

I really have to stop going by the local shop so much :fun5: They have been getting a lot of nice fish lately and I added two more this weekend. The newcomers are a sunburst Anthias and a copperband butterfly.

I've only ever had one copperband (probably straight from the wild back then) years ago and it perished probably from starvation. They are doing a much better job of handling/acclimating wild stuff these days and it was eating pretty much anything in the store and continues to munch pretty much anything I feed it. I didn't buy it for the purpose but maybe it will eat Aiptasia too. Not a major problem yet but I have a handful of persistent ones Aiptasia-X does not seem to work on.

My Jebao powerheads I have kept around for utility and the Maxspect Gyre is getting yanked. I finally and begrudgingly sprung for two of the new vortex MP40 QD's and a control module for my Apex which is supposed to be here Friday. All issues with Gyre and Jebao aside my tank will now effectively be 100% controlled by Apex. My main pump has no control with Apex other than on/off but I leave the speed control constant anyway.

I picked up some rock yesterday and filled out the center section. I have the base the way I want it but it is pretty much filled in rockslide style right now to get some smaller corals spread out. I'll try and post a picture tomorrow but its certainly no candidate for an aquascaping award :sad2: Some of the flatter smaller pieces will likely take some zoanthid frags that have grown out. also did a major cleaning yesterday and today cleaned the mass coralline algae from the end glass. Put that off too long but right now the tank looks like a scene from red planet with red hazy water.

Not sure what brand of eco rock that was but they had some nice shapes and in reality the rock they colored looks to have been some pretty good quality pacific rock to start. It really surprised me I got about half a large box of small-medium pieces and it was just 8.2 pounds. It blended in nicely and my coralline will take over anyway and it got a good seeding today when I cleaned.

I also finally went through and reorganized a bunch of wiring especially from the 5 Kessil power supplies. Everything is now all back on Apex power bars and down to using two plugs again plus one for ground probe.

Finally got tired of hearing the wife whine about electric bills and blaming "the fishtank" so having all the wiring cleaned up made it easier the measure with a killawatt I picked up yesterday. Not just for the tank but I want to take a look at some other things. I guess you have to take into account there are many low income users in FL that bring the average down but I generally run 3-4 times the average. Then again I work at home and AC runs day and night plus things like my power hungry computer. Other than the tank no real big users other than a unheated pool. All high efficiency appliances and mostly LED lighting.

Anyway my original estimate with our rates (currently 12.01 total bill/kwh) was about $50 but it was likely more when I had MH/T5 plus the heat from the MH really affected the AC in the heat of the summer. I'm waiting 24 hours for a total since pump speeds, lighting etc vary during the course of the day but the outlet running 5 kessils, main pump, ATO and one vortech has crept up to $1.11 a day but at peak flow and lighting right now. The other outlet has Apex, skimmer, airpump, CaRX, CO2, Ozone, sump light, heater. Obviously no heater running right now but was running about 50 cents a day. Tomorrow I will run that outlet 24 hours just to see real 24hr average.

Oh yeah I installed the Vortech MP40wQD's on Friday and just cleaned up the installation today. Using with an Apex WXM and does not yet seem to be quite up to date. Mysteriously it got better after about a day but pump speeds are still off by about 5% and they still have not updated to modes. Have a ticket into Neptune and I'll see how that's goes.

As far as the Vortech's... juries still out but for the price and the fact they supposedly increased flow I'm not terribly impressed. Couple thoughts...

1) They are quiet but no quieter than a much cheaper Jebao WP40 (the improved FS1400's I bought a year ago).
2) Could be the flow is more dispersed but "seems" to be noticeably a lot less than Jebao and definitely less flow than one XF-150 (when it actually worked). Can't imagine a regular MP40 before the flow increase.
3) The dry side units run so hot they will literally burn your fingers.

Speaking of a year according to aquatic log this tank has been running 11 months and 27 days. Wow it's almost a birthday.
