Zoa Colors question

Relatively new to zoas, and was wondering if they can lose color in shipment, like SPS corals can? Reason I'm asking is I made an online purchase that looks similar, but nohere near as bright as the picture on the site. Wondering if I got hosed or do they in fact lose some color in the process of shipping?

I have never had any lose color due to overnight shipping. Most of the time as far as I have noticed that they will not be as colorful is because of the lighting. Zoanthids are one of the worst I think for color enhancing with 20k bulbs and over actinic lighting. What is you lighting compared to the place you bought them from?

I've never seen or heard of ANY color loss in shipping zoanthids.
Always comes down to difference in lighting...or as you say, a possible hose...intentional or not.

Yea, Zoa's will show insane colors, more so than SPS under actinics. Always ask for a pic with flash or 10k lighting. Look for the blue rocks or dark picture to determine of the pic is showing true color.

99% of zoa's will not lose any color in shipping. (I say 99% because alien eyes will turn greenish if they get super cold. I've never seen any other zoa lose color from shipping.)

I'll see if I can dig up some REALLY good examples of actinic vs regular lighting zoa's people have been selling.

heres one. This is a much better example than the thousands of greys that are being sold as blue. These are an orangy brownish peach color and under actinics they are this amazing pink color. you can go thru zoaid.com and click on the pictures, most of them will also have a 10k shot showing what they REALLY look like in our tanks.

Pic was probably taken under 20k with actinics.

haha i know!! people want to trade their superman monti's, their sunset monti's, entire acan colonies, purple monster frags :lol:

if i had asked for a trade like that last year, i would have gotten flamed in the trading forum for such an outrageous thought :lol:

I got some zoas that had some really nice colors at my lfs but when they went into my tank, the colors weren't as nice. My lfs uses PC actinics which greatly enhances the colors. Like others have said, probably the pictures were taken under actinic bulbs.

Except I have 20K halide and pc actinics, too.....


I think there may have been some photoshopping done.. maybe just the contrast, I'm not sure. Either way, they are nice, just not as nice as I thought I was getting.

I would say that there is a major differance....The only other thing could be they used 20k's with VHO actinics. There is no comparison to VHO and PC as far as actinics go...I don't even think T-5s have equaled the color output of VHO actnics. Although there is a report that, what used to be URI is coming out with a T-5 that will equal the actinic VHO.

hard to tell how photoshoped your colony was. any chance you can get the original picture? or relay what internet site it was on?

there arent any petstores in Blacksburg anymore. we had a local mom & pop pet store, that worked with our reef club to get some saltwater stuff in stock. we never got any sps to speak of, but luckily we used to get in alot fo zoas, any size/any color for $35. got a nice colony of 500 blue zoas with red skirts last year. but they just moved to christiansburg, broke down all of their saltwater tanks a month ago, probably wont be set back up with livestock until sometime mid to late summer sadly.

the best stores (AMAZING saltwater specialty stores) are in Richmond (230miles away). and then theres a decent store in lynchburg, but nothing fancy (except a cool mantis).

we have a bunch of sps freaks here (including a TOTM), they got all the "cool stuff". only a couple zoa guys. and no one does LPS around here to speak of. introduce yourself on the NRV forum if you are looking for something. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=262
