Zoa frag tank and possible QT?

Hi RC,

Was wondering if it was possible to have a frag tank for zoa polyp farming and use it as a QT as well?

If not its cool.

But could you also help me out with what I might consider equipment wise for a frag tank in general? What I'll need thats important compared to what you would normally have in a regular tank?

Cheers to Reefing!

The only problem i see with having a QT tank that is also a frag tank is when you are dealing with fish disease treatment. I think a frag tank would be ok for holding and watching the health of a fish before putting into your DT. However alot of medication is pretty harsh on coral, besides prazi pro(ive heard).

I keep separate frag and QT tanks

In setting up a frag tank, of course lights are important. Depending on the size of your tank and what you plan on fragging a skimmer is optional(zoos probably wont require a skimmer as slightly dirty water stimulates growth) But filtration is still needed, so cultured filter floss or maybe some carbon in a HOB filter would be good too. Powerheads are important of course haha.

My frag tank is simple and effective, 20gal long, penguin biowheel 400 with filterfloss, two koralia nanos(dont remember the rating) and a 350gph powerhead as well pointed at my sps frags. also I have about 20lbs of live rock and no sandbed. running a 4bulb t5ho aquaticlife fixture as well with 3 actinics and one powder pink daylight bulb(all geissman)

HTH!!!!

Thanks for the info and the response!

Could you help me clarify a bit what the difference between a POWERHEAD and the Koralia Nanos are? I thought they both do the same thing?

As far as the live rock: Can i do without it? I was thinking of something like what you would see in an LFS for frags.

As for lighting, ill probably be moving my kessil 360 over and buying a radion xr15 for my 30 gallon.

And ill probably skim because i have an extra hydor one sitting around.

GL HF :D

The koraliais a powerhead too I just forgot the name of the other one I'm using lol.

You definitely can do a LR free frag tank! The only reason I have LR is for filtration as I am only running a hob and not running a skimmer. In a 30gal with just frag racks, I think a skimmer would be necessary.

For lighting, i don't have experience with either of those, however I've heard very good thingthings about both of those lights. The only thing I would warn(you should be ok but...) Is that if a new drag has gone through shipping or is freshly cut, the intensity of the light might be a little much and could stress it out. I believe those lights are eqequipped with optics? That seriously increases par which some low light corals may not like. Again I'm not an eexpert but these are my thoughts towards the matter. I Love my t5 system haha :)

Good luck!!

Hehe, good thing I got an old t5 i could use as well. only two bulbs though. might need to switch one of them out! :D

I ran 2 t5ho on my first tank everr. Grew frogspawn, closed brain and a variety of zoos. Definitely not a bad choice and much cheaper than leds lol me gusta
