help me please!! I'm not sure what exactly this is but my guess is zoa pox. I dont know what to do to get rid of them this is my first disease/problem ever. I got alot of zoas and dont want to lose anymore. I will just throw this frag away now if its going to prevent it from getting onto others. Sadly this is effecting my two favorite colonies my Armor Of Gods and my Kedds Reds.

This is roughly the 4th or 5th day the entire colony of Kedds Reds has remained closed and rougly half of my Armor of Gods are now remaining closed.

To figure out how much to use, decide if you want to simply improve coral growth, spread, and color. If so, then you should dose around 5 ppm twice daily (down to 2-3 ppm works also). If you are having problems with coral or fish health, dose up to around 30 ppm twice daily.

Calculate the total net number of gallons in your tank (minus rocks, sand, etc). Enter that number here ______.

You will now need to do a little math. The amounts below are for 100 gallons of water so if you have 50 net gallons, cut the amounts shown below in half etc.

Dosing amounts using Iherb product:
1/4 tsp=1112 mg.

For every 100 gallons:

5 ppm ----- 1892 mg VC
10 ppm ---- 3785 mg VC
15 ppm ---- 5677 mg VC
20 ppm ---- 7570 mg VC
25 ppm ---- 9462 mg VC
30 ppm ---- 11355 mg VC

After you have figured out how much you want to dose at each dosing, enter that number here _____. This is your dose to be used twice a day.

Notes:
*Be sure your pH and alk are within normal reef limits before starting. Adjust if needed. Monitor weekly.
*Shoot for a ppm of around 5 or lower if only dosing for improved coral growth, coloration, and spread. Shoot for higher amounts up to 30 ppm if you are having melting zoas or closed zoas and look for the causes of your problems as you dose. Check for high nitrates, pests, zoa pox, predators, and unstable water conditions.
*Dose low amounts and increase the amount slowly over the course of a few days to a couple weeks.
* If you notice an algae bloom or increased skim on your glass then cut back by half until it disappears.
* Watch your skimmer, it will start to skim more.
* Dose the amount twice a day in a fast moving area of your sump or overflow. You may dilute the vitamin c in ro/di water for a minute then pour into my overflow. If adding to sump, try and add the vitamin c after filtration such as skimmers and reactors.
* If you have a question, ask here. Puffy checks this thread daily.
* The instructions in this guide and throughout this thread are based on using pure Sodium Ascorbate, not vitamin c pills and other non-buffered forms of vitamin c.

yours don't look like they got zoa pox looking at pics in link above, good luck.

the vitamin c from iherb is the recommended kind to use, i use it and reefnut does also.
If you check the rc thread for vitamin c dosing there is a coupon code you can use also.

I read something about peroxide and FW dips, Does anyone have any more info on this method?

I really dont have the money to be ordering anything due to my recent health issues and not being able to work at the moment. I already am going to have to put my tank rebuild on hold because of things.

If its not zoa pox what is the problem? I have probably 30 kinds of zoas, and it is only my Kedds Reds, and part of my AOG's.

EDIT: oh and i blew them off with a powerhead yesterday (what I could anyways) and they are back today... Dont know if that was a good idea or not though.

A Cure

Thanh Nguyen has discovered a repeatable cure to Zoanthid Pox!

Now that we know a little more about the problem, here is the rest of the article about the solution provided by Thanh Nguyen.

An Intrepid Aquarist by the name of Thanh Nguyen has made some remarkable leaps in reversing the Zoanthid Pox with Furan-2.

Thanh moved to America from his native country of Vietnam in 1990 looking for a better life. He lived in California for 7 years and then moved to Maryland in 1997 to help his mother who was ill with a brain tumor. She needed surgery and support from her family.

He has always loved tropical fish and his first Salt water Aquarium was a 55 gallon Aqua-clear 500. Like most of us he had his ups and downs keeping a saltwater Aquarium. He then began specializing in fresh water fish and as a result had a lot of success with Furan-2.

Years later in June 2006 he started a new 75 gallon Reef Aquarium keeping Exotic Zoanthids, SPS, LPS and fishes.

He considers himself new to the hobby, but the information he has listed below is priceless and makes him wise beyond his years!

What is Furan-2?

Thanh states: I used to be a Discus hobbyist and fungus is a common illness for these fishes. Furan-2 is often used to cure fungus and it has worked for me for many times.

Furan-2 tablets are effective against a wide variety of gram positive and gram negative bacterial diseases for freshwater and saltwater fish. This medication will cause a harmless green color in the aquarium, which can be removed with activated carbon. This medication can be used in conjunction with Aquarium Pharmaceuticals anti-parasitic medications. This medication will not harm the biological filter in fresh or saltwater aquariums.

For treatment of: Dropsy, furunculosis, gill disease, fin and tail rot and black molly disease.

Instructions (as per the manufacture):
Use one capsule for every 10 gallons of aquarium water
Wait 24 hours and repeat dose
Wait another 24 hours and make a 25% water change
Repeat this treatment for a second time for a total of 4 doses of Furan-2
Make a final 25% water change and add fresh activated carbon
Repeat if necessary
Ingredients:
Each capsule of Furan-2 contains:
60mg Nitrofurazone
25mg Furazolidone
2mg Methylene Blue Trihydrate

Good work Darrick!

That is a lot of good info.

I still dose vitamin C and now hagfish is doing also with some results.

Can you see the results in your tank after you started using it?

I do not want to continually dose anything. I dont even dose my cal or alk. I just do frequent fairly large water changes.

I cant just dip them in something a few times.???

I dont like adding anything directly to my tank because i am scared to add to much and hurt/kill stuff.

get a 5 or 10 gallon tank for quarantine to treat injured or diseased corals or your just gonna have to throw them out. you can use cheap swirley cf bulbs from walmart on cheap small tank with cheap hang on filter.

probably just wind up pitching them then...

This couldnt have happened at more of a worse time I can barely afford my salt and water right now... much less buy more equipment to set up a quarantine tank and medicine. Sadly I might just have to get out for awhile.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that I don't think you're dealing with zoa pox.

If you go to Coralpedia and look here: http://www.coralpedia.com/index.php?module=Gallery2&g2_itemId=762 you'll see that the zoa pox are teeny tiny little white bumps and I don't see any of those on your zoas. Zoa pox are definitely no fun, been there done that, but I don't think that's what you have.

Sometimes zoas will just close for no apparent reason, just like they'll melt for no apparent reason. I suggest you look for spiders or zoa eating nudis. Do you have any fish in that system that might pick at your zoas?

I have had my face basically glued to the tank frame like DOTZ's skimmer for 3-4 days now and I have seen nothing other then the white stuff you can see in the pictures and like I stated earlier only the 2 frags I mentioned are effected so far.
