Zoa Question

For those with experience:

Does it look better to keep Zoa's growing as a specimen or to grow a variety of them on a common rock to add color and an interesting look.

For those who may grow them clustered together, would you post a photo to provide a general idea of how it looks.

Thanks.

Dana

I think large colonies look better as a rule. But it takes a long time to get things to grow to an impressive size, and a lot of people don't have the patience and just keep adding more stuff.

I have a mixed zoo rock colony wit hover 300+ polyps on it and love the different colors. Really makes a difference!!!

Yes, please send a picture.

Also, how about mushrooms - do they look better in colonies or as a mixed group. I know they will overrun Zoas so I would not do that, but will mushrooms tolerate other mushrooms?

Thanks.

Had my son in a panic

Had my son in a panic

Was helping my son check his water parameters. I checked PH and Ammonia. When I was done, I accidentally left the PH tube and Ammonia card out. Then I left for a few hours this afternoon and forgot my cell phone.

Well, he saw the two setting there together and panicked because he thought the PH tube was the Ammonia and that the Ammonia has toxically high. He tried calling my cell phone only to have it ring at home.

He wanted to do a water change but was afraid to use the water I had made up around midnight because I had told him he had to wait 24 hours before using saltwater when we made it or it was dangerous to use (it's what I had read on-line). As you can imagine, when I got home I was met by one stressed out guy.

check out the zoa's for sale on Ebay if you want to get an idea about colors and such. Vendors sell mixed varieties on rocks all the time, same with mushrooms too.

I like the mixed look too, but it does make it a little more difficult to frag. You just have to remember which is which when you pull the rock out, because they will close up pretty quick and all look pretty much the same.

I have several collonies of just one type and I also have a mixed colony. I like them both, but the isolated is really sweet looking

Here are some pics. The first one is a mixed rock that I actually found at petco...right?! I bought it all closed up only because I saw one of the purple lace polyps, but turned out to be one pretty coral. The 5th one is another mixed colony but the rest are colonies of a single zoa

Thanks. Both mixed and unmixed look nice, but I think after seeing some examples that I like the unmixed a bit better.

Now the question is: If I have some that are mixed, how would I safely separate them? Right now there are only a couple polyps of each, but they are mixed tight.

Thanks.

I wouldn't go by the pics you see on Ebay. Many of them are stolen from other's pics, even online vendors.

Pictures are pictures, she wanted images of mixed colonies, they have them there.

I would take some bone cutters or stony cutters and cut the plug in half and then glue it on other parts. I've recently discovered how easy it is to do this. Although you want to be careful not to clip an actual polyp obviously.

Also by doing it that way, you're less likely to lose polyps like you would by trying to scrape them off of the plug with a razor blade.
