Zoa Squirt in my Eye

He must know this thread is still going... all these worried reefers. Plus I want to know what the doctor said.

Kinda funny though the first thing a doctor does when you tell him about something weird that happens to you that you is go google it. Of course when I came in with a slightly atypical case of poison oak covering 30% of my body the doctor told me it was bacterial and sent me home with oral antibiotics... I said so your telling me to go home when I have a bacterial infection that manifested in 48hrs and now covers 30% of my body "shouldn't you be calling the CDC... or mabye you should just give me some Prednizone for my POISON OAK"

Anyway if you have something weird going on make sure you research it yourself too before you go in... if you have time. Or research it before you frag those zoos.

Samething happened to me once with a small mussel/**** clam on a piece of live rock, and my eye was beet red as well.A few drops and a time and my eye was back to being just a little red as usual:smokin:

since I got a couple chuckles out of this thread myself... I just thought I would add that when fragging acans with a Dremel its best to keep your mouth closed... and start from the underside...

SALT WATER IRRITATES YOUR EYES?

SERIOUSLY? REALLY?

Cmon guys, you are all growing vagin as.

I am not sure if that was an attempt at humor or just a nitwit comment.. .in either case trying to fool the sensor filters is not a welcome thing around here. Furthermore, if you read the contents of the thread you would understand that we are not talking about saltwater! We are talking about toxins that are produced by many corals. The toxins can be irritating or even deadly in some cases. Aside from the toxic secretions that the corals produce, there are many OTHER things in the water in your tank that can EASILY cause eye damage and/or infection/disease if introduced into the bloodstream.

I meant when the poster got squirted in the eye, the saltwater (in and around the coral) alone would cause eye irritation.

Seems every day someone is complaining about this fabled toxin that kills you instantly upon any sort or contact!

This is simply not true, you need to get the toxin into your bloodstream by an open cut (very slim chance) or ingesting it (in the case of that dog death story a few months back.

I hope the proper anatomic name for a part of the female anatomy is not censored. This isnt China.

People need to relax, if you are nervous about this 'toxin' killing you.

A) Dont have zoas.
B) Where shoulder length gloves and a full plastic face shield.

Simple as that, so I have no sympathy for anyone "infected" with the "toxin".

Maybe instead of being so obtuse and uninformed, you could take a moment to educate yourself. This is a VERY SERIOUS subject that VERY FEW people are aware of. Your comments are uninformed, if not reckless.

You use the word "fabled".

From the MW dictionary:
Fable: a fictitious narrative or statement: as a: a legendary story of supernatural happenings b: a narration intended to enforce a useful truth; especially : one in which animals speak and act like human beings

Synonymns: Mistruth, Lie, Myth

Your uninformed comment infers that you either have no idea WHAT palytoxin is, or do not believe it exists. In either case, your comments are way off base. The existance and danger of Palytoxin is far from a LIE or MYTH, it is a real world toxin that is well documented.

Secondly, who is complaining? I see many instances of people attempting to educate others by pointing out the dangers of certain corals KNOWN to produce HIGH LEVELS of the KNOWN toxin, but nobody complaining.

So lets look at the reality:

From the American Heritage Science Dictionary:
Definition: An extremely powerful toxin occurring in corals of the genus Palythoa of the South Pacific. Palytoxin disrupts the flow of ions across cell membranes and is the most potent known naturally occurring poison, being rapidly fatal to humans in doses of 4 micrograms. One of the most complex known nonprotein substances, it has more contiguous carbon atoms (115) than any other naturally occurring molecule. Chemical formula: C129-H223-N3-O54.

A documented study on Palytoxin as historically used as a spear tip poison can be found here: http://www2.hawaii.edu/~bemorton/Neuroscience/Neurochemistry/Palytoxin.html

etc.

Again, you are not well informed. Injecting the toxin into the bloodstream is certainly an efficient means of delivery, as is direct ingestion. However, your eyes are another very efficient and sensitive means of entry for toxins such as palytoxin. ANY MUCUS MEMBRANE SUCH AS THE EYES EARS NOSE OR MOUTH IS!!! The sensitive membranes and tissue that make up the eyes (and other mucus membranes) are very easily DIRECTLY damaged by the action of palytoxin as well as prime points of entry into the nervous system. It attacks cells directly, as well as traveling into the bloodstream. Moreover, many peoples skin is easily irritated to the point they break out in a rash and/or have trouble breathing, just from handling corals with high levels of the toxin present.

Honestly Matthew, do educate yourself before you make comments like you did above. Your presence in this thread has obviously only been to make fun of something that you do not understand. You may have no sympathy for those who do have problems associated with the toxin, but the irony is that YOU may be the one responsible by telling them that the danger is a "FABLE".

And I give constructive tips on how to avoid getting banned. :D

Noted!

Thanks for setting me straight Bean!

also perhaps if you used the word for that particular female part in reference to that part and not a persons actions or fears it would not have been both offensive and abusive. context matters.
