I meant when the poster got squirted in the eye, the saltwater (in and around the coral) alone would cause eye irritation.
Seems every day someone is complaining about this fabled toxin that kills you instantly upon any sort or contact!
Maybe instead of being so obtuse and uninformed, you could take a moment to educate yourself. This is a VERY SERIOUS subject that VERY FEW people are aware of. Your comments are uninformed, if not reckless.
You use the word "fabled".
From the MW dictionary:
Fable: a fictitious narrative or statement: as a: a legendary story of supernatural happenings b: a narration intended to enforce a useful truth; especially : one in which animals speak and act like human beings
Synonymns: Mistruth, Lie, Myth
Your uninformed comment infers that you either have no idea WHAT palytoxin is, or do not believe it exists. In either case, your comments are way off base. The existance and danger of Palytoxin is far from a LIE or MYTH, it is a real world toxin that is well documented.
Secondly, who is complaining? I see many instances of people attempting to educate others by pointing out the dangers of certain corals KNOWN to produce HIGH LEVELS of the KNOWN toxin, but nobody complaining.
So lets look at the reality:
From the American Heritage Science Dictionary:
Definition: An extremely powerful toxin occurring in corals of the genus Palythoa of the South Pacific. Palytoxin disrupts the flow of ions across cell membranes and is the most potent known naturally occurring poison, being rapidly fatal to humans in doses of 4 micrograms. One of the most complex known nonprotein substances, it has more contiguous carbon atoms (115) than any other naturally occurring molecule. Chemical formula: C129-H223-N3-O54.
A documented study on Palytoxin as historically used as a spear tip poison can be found here:

This is simply not true, you need to get the toxin into your bloodstream by an open cut (very slim chance) or ingesting it (in the case of that dog death story a few months back.
etc.

Again, you are not well informed. Injecting the toxin into the bloodstream is certainly an efficient means of delivery, as is direct ingestion. However, your eyes are another very efficient and sensitive means of entry for toxins such as palytoxin. ANY MUCUS MEMBRANE SUCH AS THE EYES EARS NOSE OR MOUTH IS!!! The sensitive membranes and tissue that make up the eyes (and other mucus membranes) are very easily DIRECTLY damaged by the action of palytoxin as well as prime points of entry into the nervous system. It attacks cells directly, as well as traveling into the bloodstream. Moreover, many peoples skin is easily irritated to the point they break out in a rash and/or have trouble breathing, just from handling corals with high levels of the toxin present.
Honestly Matthew, do educate yourself before you make comments like you did above. Your presence in this thread has obviously only been to make fun of something that you do not understand. You may have no sympathy for those who do have problems associated with the toxin, but the irony is that YOU may be the one responsible by telling them that the danger is a "FABLE".
