Zoa Zoo Startup

I agree with the rest of the thread... with that common of water changes and minimal bio waste in the water it should not take long at all for you to hone in on the best water types to grow zoanthids... I really like your idea for a SE Asia zoanthid tank... I LOVE the way eagle eyes look so you should have a nice setup in a few months!!! I am looking forward to seeing what you have created.... :strooper: but a word of advice, be patient with the growth rates... sometimes they grow fast, sometimes they don't... it is pretty much a luck of the draw on the growth rate.... :debi:

Thanks Medi
I am not any any big rush. The tank is getting past that empty stage so just letting things happen.

Some shots, still getting some camera practice.

This one is with a flash on the UW setting. You can see the Spiny Oyster's siphons sticking out...

A small Zoa Island. The bright green slimy algea came from the shop. I just blew it off. Not sure what it was? Cool color, probably not good though.

Going to Phan Thiet in the morning. Not good for snorkling or diving' pretty turbid water. World class kitesurfing though and rocks covered with Zoas! Taking a hammer and chisel with. Wish me luck. I hope I find something cool.

What dip do you recommend. I just put a drop of Lugals in ablout half a gallon of water. Anything else I ought to be doing? I don't have access to alot of fancy chemicals packaged for the Reef trade so I am stuck making my own.

What chemicals do you have?

I assume hydrogen peroxide and freshwater as a basic...

Hi Worm. I have peroxide, iodine (Lugals Solution), Calcium Chloride and Baking Soda. Not much else. I can get raw chemicals, the LFS has alot of stuff that they get from China, but my analysis (Best I can do to intrerpret the ingredients), shows that many of these things have stuff like zinc and copper in them. I think many commercially available products do everywhere I just prefer not to use them.

Tank look good Neil. Good luck find some pretty Zoas. Show pictures. Terry

Thanks Lionfish. I'll get some pics up soon. I got a couple things. I'm not greedy and would rather see how they do. I picked up about 4 colonies last week and put them in different area's. You wouldn't recognize them from a week ago and the colors have morphed way more than I had expected. I also have a bunch of Paly's that came out of nowhere and now are doing really strange things. There is a dominant one that seems to be taking over and growing a huge crown. He was about 22mm a week ago now closer to 29mm. The others haven't changed alot. The guys I just got have a steely silver colour with a bit of orange and red here and there. Even amongst their own colony there are some striking color differences. I reckon they are the same species but if colour was an indication you wouldnt know it.

Hey cool zoas, I've found that it takes a month or so for them to readjust to new conditions. I'm sure they will continue to change color on you. If you get a chance could you take a close picture of the oral disk of the ones on the left in the last picture?

Thanks! Sure I will do my best. I can't take "blue" pics LOL. This are more or less realistic.
