Zoanthid Anonymous

another thing i noticed from a certain obsessive compulsive bidder was they were buying an awful lot of gorgonians, seafans, and elegance corals.... to me...this screams newb w/ deep pockets. no reefkeeper or business with the least bit of since and experience would buy these things given their tract records in an aquarium. let alone buy it off ebay...

you were right azurel. one of the ebay bidders in question, just put up an auction selling a zoa frag pack, using the very SAME pictures as the auctions he won those particular zoas from. this kind of practice is just down right sad for the hobby.

Just amazes me that the things I make a living on doing research are actually worth so much on the net. When I am out diving and see what is called a PPE or RPE etc. in this forum (and expensive!!), I am all excited because I am wondering just what species it is... guess that qualifies me for zoanthid addiction.

To me, I am fascinated by zoanthids (Zoanthus/Palythoa etc) because:

1. They do look rather cool.
2. What consists of a species (i.e. color/morph variation) varies so much.
3. So many new species, genera, families left to be discovered.
4. They have zooxanthellae, which again require a ton of research.

I think you could research zoanthids your whole life and not be finished.

i am very jealous of your profession. the awesome thing about your profession, are its parallels to the hobby, but you dont have to really deal with the "hobby aspects", which in this case like you said have a downside, and kinda kill the fun of the hobby (the cost and trends of zoas).

you are in fact, doing just the fun parts of the hobby ;)

Yea I seen that, he was the one that outbid me and everybody else with a $532 dollar bid. Doesn't even have the decency to let a few days pass.

Not growing any of those out? Just having them shipped to him for fragging and then reshipping out as frag packs to the highest bidder?

Uh, ok...

I just need to buy one more color, no really, just one more.

haha, that sounds just like me :D either that or - "come on now, how often do you see a color like that at the lfs... or for that price online... it's a good deal, i have to get it now!!" meanwhile my personal savings is almost gone and soon i will have nothing but loan money to sustain me....

I hear ya on that. The casinos in Tunica got alot of the left overs for the first few years (in for 7 with a BSME;)-I know, most people are doctors after 7...). As a true addict on a limited or 'dictated' budget;), you may never see a full colony of your own zoas. I find myself fragging the last cool zoa I got as soon as it grew enough to frag to trade for another cool zoa. It never ends. I've got over 50 different colors/morphs, but still don't have a fraction of what I think are the nicest (like what alot of you have...). Of course, I am an equal oppurtunity addict. I'm addicted to ugly LPS and SPS, too. Zoadone is not the only recovery drug for me;).
