Zoanthids dying rapidly, Please help!

My zoanthid colonies are not doing well at all. I have lost 4 complete colonies so far. I am trying to figure out what it is. I found a nudibranch on one colony the other day and got rid of it. Since then I still have polyps dying. The only other thing I can see on the colonies ar these tiny little transparent/white worms. They are long and threadlike, and in certain places they make a ball shape. Does anyone know what these are? Is this what is causing my die-off. I know many of you are going to tell me to dip them but none of the LFS have Lugol's. Is there anything else to dip them in?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The osmosis shock alone will kill most everything, both good and bad. A lot of reefers don't bother to set their PH or temp, which is a big mistake. Even if they have dipped a dozen colonies that way, sooner or later they will dip a colony that will reacte negatively as a result. Play it safe and match the PH and temp with or without the Lugols. Allow it to sit for a couple minutes, then invert the rock and shake it clockwise and counterclockwise as fast as you can for 30 seconds or so. Then place it back into your tank with your actinics running only for the rest of the day.

Trust me, if you found 1 nudi, you have many more which you haven't seen. I would order the Lugols online at any one of the many online stores or ask your LFS to start stocking it.

Also, read the sticky above, "Zoanthid Information Draft" for a list of predators to watch for.

When you say they are dying, please describe in detail what you mean. Are the shrinking until the disappear or are eaten? Are they shreading or flaking? Are they detaching and blowing away in the current? If there a blackish, whitish or opaque coloration covering each polyp? Remove the colony and do the sniff test, does it have a foul odor? If you are not sure, remove a healthy colony and then smell the sick colonies again, you'll smell the difference right away. What fish do you have? Any inverts? What's your tank temp, and all your parameters for that matter? You've lost 4 colonies in how many days to be exact? There are a dozen more questions I could ask, but all are important to diagnose the culprit. Just throwing out as much as I can to help you. A pic would also help. Hang in there my friend, good luck.

I suspect the "white worms" you see are nudibranch eggs. I'd dip in FW right away for 5-10 minutes. Like Much said, shake them vigorously in the water at the end of the dip. Then look in the dip container for dead nudibranchs. Best to use a light colored container so you can see the nudibranchs better.

O.k. Here are a couple of bad pics.

My temp is @77. SG is 1.025. Nitrates, Nitrites are 0 or close to it. Tank has been up for 6 months wih no problems until now. As far a livestock goes, I have 2 ocellaris clowns and 1 sixline wrasse. Ihave hemits and snails, probably about 10 each.(NO sundial snails) I have a sand sifting star also.

It looks like they are closing slowly until they die. Some of them look like the actual zoanthid had melted on top of the stem. On others it looks like there are a couple of white dots on each of the zoanthid stem. One of my colonies went from a purpleish flesh to a white flesh after the zoanthid closes. It seem like every colony has different symptoms, but the most common symptom is the white dots on the stem. And the time all of this took was about 7-8 days.

Quick question, HOw do you adjust your ph in R.O. water?

Sorry/ I use just a little pinch of baking soda. Looks like some thing is Eating them are irratating them to death. I'd dip them in fresh water. My tap water PH is just right for my dipping... Then i put in Q- tine tank. The other zoos in your pic seem ok
