Some of my PPE and RPE zoanthids do this and I dont know why. Its like they extend all the way and even if I touch them, they do not retract....

maybe

too much light?
not enough light?
fungus?
parasites?

Well...
How could anyone answer your questions if they don't know about your system?

It is probably because you don't have enough light.

Please post what size tank, sump, lights, params, equipments, how long you've got the polyps, etc,...
That way others will be able to help.

I have SPS's growing fast, Favias, other zoanthids, chalices, frogspawn, etc and everything is growing well with a nice color, nothing shows that I need more light. Last time I checked I had 0 phosphates but I have to check again.... I had a slight problem of brown algae but I have it under control now.

my rpe's doesn't want bright light, im using 150 watts metal halide, originally i placed them on top near the light, their bodies extend almost one and a half inches and polyps doesn't open that much. Then I tried placing them in the sand, their bodies retracted to more or less one inches and polyps opened beautifully.

I also have the same issue with my zoas. I decided to go all SPS because i had better success with that over zoas.
