Zoas acting weird

I got these zoas towards the beginning of my tank life so they could be a month and a half old. They came from my local dealer and they were perfect. Ever since I got them, they've been closed and just recently started popping out a little more. The picture shows them at their worst. I've moved them up and down the rock they are on, the farther up the worse they got. I have a 29 gallon biocube hqi, I have my skimmer on (I know they suck.) I've read they like it dirty. I also have some mushrooms and yellow polyps. Half of the yellow polyps are out and more are coming out (fairly new) and the mushrooms are meh most of the time.

My lfs has checked my levels everything is zero except nitrate is 5ppm~~.

The temp moves a little usually between 78-80.

I have a power head and the return output pointed towards the front.

I would love to know where did you read that zoas "like dirty".
Could you also tell me what exactly that means, please? LOL!

I would try do some water partial changes to bring nitrates down slowly.
Perhaps 10% with a good salt mix would help them out.

Again, it is so hard to really tell you what's going on there. They are closed and some species do that time to time even if they are in perfect health.

I can tell you that if you noticed they close when you place them close to the light that could be simply a reaction while adapting to your lights/system. Go slow!

I'm assuming there is no predation, irritation and basically speaking the system is ready for the zoas.

So many variables"¦ Also, your tank is fairly TOO NEW. ;)

Grandis.

I have a similar issue with one of my frags, all other zoas open fully(even the frag right next to this one) but it only opens for a cpl hours in the morning and thats it. I attributed it to the colony being on a live muscle and since the muscle is opening and closing all the time it disturbs the zoas into closing but now I think it may be that particular zoa type doesnt like the daytime lights as much as all the others.

Tried it in a shaded area with same results so I am going to assume for now it is just more sensitive than the others and they will eventually open up for longer than a cpl hours in the morning as it gets used to my tank.
