Zoas Closed or Very Small

Hey guys,

I just came back home from a summer session of classes and asked my dad to watch my tank while I was gone. (If you saw my post in general discussion it's still the same story) My dad is fairly competent when it comes to reefs, his little 24 nano is doing just fine.

Anyways, I came back and my 2 colonies of zoas are in horrible shape... I have one small colony of Watermelons and another small colony of Pink Lemonades. All the polyps still appear to be there, but they have no mats, won't open up, but the few that are open are about the size of pin heads.

I did a 20% w/c (as opposed to the 10% weekly) when I came back hoping that would help and the watermelons have opened up a few more, but still really small. The lack of mat is what is concerning me the most. Also I don't see any spots or hitch hikers on them, just small naked zoas.

My parameters are fine, all right where they should be. The only thing that I don't have is Iodide test kit, but everything else is par.

My lighting isn't the greatest, but it's a 4x96 watt PC over a 75 gallon. I have 2x10,000k and 2x03 Actinics.

On a final note, all my other corals are doing fine, Pagoda Cup, Torch, and Green Bubble...

I have to get ready for work, but I can put up some pics later tonight if I get out in time.

Any help or suggestions would be great!

Wow I'm in the same situation. I also have the same set up you've mentioned above. My green bubble is also doing fine as well as my hammer and ducan. Even more interesting is that my deep sea zoas are as happy as can be while my dragon eye and green purple zoas haven't opened for nearly a week now. So I am also tuned in for any advice!

Well since you and I are in the same boat, let's hope we get rescued! ;)

Did the usual 10% w/c yesterday so I decided to test the water again...
Here are the current params
Temp 82F (hmmm that's hotter than usual... could that be it, or is that still with in reason?
pH: 8.4
NH4: 0
NO3: 0
NO4: 5-10ppm
KH: 8dKH
Ca: 400ppm

Also talked to a guy at the LFS, he said maybe my Spotted Hawk could be something to do with it?? I mean, he is a fierce little bugger with inverts and fish relatively similar in size, but never seen him nip at the corals...

Wow! My parameters are also nearly identical! I'm beginning to think it's my lighting. I'm going to change my bulbs out as soon as they come in the mail. I'm making this assumption because my corals that are able to feed on free floating food are doing fine. I'm a total noob so someone correct me if I'm saying something stupid.

Pics?

As long as thier not melting Brett your good to go.. check around the sides as well as the zoa mat for new growth "budding' or spreading.. Sometimes i find one polyp will close to give birth to a new polyp..

Ahh, yes... I did promise some pics didn't I?? Sorry, I just never got around to snapping some...

Anyways, here is one that I took this evening. I would say that these polyps are pinhead size.

I am sorry to hear that there are zoas out there that are doing worse than mine...
To be quite honest, these watermelons are doing a heck of a lot better than a week or 2 ago when I first came back. Only since I posted this thread here, in the zoa sub, have these really started to open back up. My pink lemonades are still just little bulbs.... I think maybe one of those are opened...

It's really funny that you say that. Last night my dragon eye began to open up. I'm posting from my iPhone so I'm not sure how to post a picture but as soon as I figure out how to I will.

Hahah, well maybe all we needed to do was talk some trash about them, and get them all fired up!!
If the picture is on your iPhone you might just be able to attach to the post with the paper clip button... not sure though
If not, you can always email it to yourself, then next time you have access to a computer you can do it from there...
