Zoas.......LED vs Halide ?

Herbie

Yep,that one
Just wondering what everyones experience is with Zoa's and prefered lighting thats best.
I have had zoas for a long time, always in a mixed reef along with SPS, LPS etc. Long story short, zoas never seemed to be happy. Never fully opened, half colonys closed while others are open, etc. Growth not the greatest, but colors good. Mosty kept under lots of halide lighting.

I recenty switched to LED's in my frag and display tank. Almost instantly zoas are looking better than ever. Fully open all day long, look great. Larger and spreading more rapidly. SPS, and LPS are also doing great.

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this when switching to LED's over halides?

I ordered an LED setup today from reefbreeders. From what I've been researching, there seems to be a lot of positive reaction from zoas under LEDs.

I've heard that zoas do very well under LEDs. I also read that they do not need full spectrum lighting, meaning they only need royal blue and white. From personal experience I've seen my zoas do extremely well under led and 20k mh. I think(many variables) I'm seeing more growth under mh but the leds bring out amazing color.

As far as ZOAs not opening. Have you tried dipping. I like the 1:10 peroxide dip to remove algae and other crud. I also use revive if something isn't opening.

led's are nice for color pop and the electric bill.

metal halide are hard on the electric bill.

i hear a lot of people say the zoas do well under leds. More variation in light with the leds; probably get more lighting options too.

I am still having very good results with my zoas since switching over to LED's. So much so, that I have added some of the more colorful zoas that are all responding very well to the LED lighting.
Still getting good growth and color with SPS, and LPS just much better results with zoas since switching to led's from halides.
Its not just the blue and whites I am using, my led's are also providing UV and the pink/purple spectrum for the proper spctrum for all corals.
Still not sure why zoas are reacting better under LED's vs halides though. It cant be more intensity with the halides causing th zoas to close up........I am running as much if not more powerful Led's than the halides I was running.
Temps are much more consistant with the Leds' . Maybe thats helping some.

my zoas are doing great under my led light just lost 2 sps cause of light acclimation got the hang of it have bought a jedi mind trick monti and it is also happy at the sand bed led are very good some zoas change to a brighter color had under t5 until i put leds

37gal cube with 350W kessil blue tuna almost max ramp up. All Z's and P's doing well. some of them are 6-8" from waters surface too.

All of my Zoas have almost doubled in size (from about 6 polyps each ranging from anywhere to 20 polyps).

I bought them all as frags, I have never had experience using hallide lighting, I didnt want the electricity cost, or heat. I have the reefbreeders photo24 on my 65 gallon tank.

I am soon moving to a 220gal and getting 2 more reefbreeders units, my zoas are constantly happy!!!

I try to target feed them Reef Chilli from BRS, not sure if they eat it, but I do it once a week lol.

You can have success with either... it just depends on what you are looking for. There are advantages to both.

If I was doing a Z&P only tank, I would do T5 or VHO.

The reefbreeders state that they operate at 4500k isn't that far less then what most coral need? That's the one part of the RB's that has me confused. However with all the good feedback I'll probably be getting the photon 32.

my utter chaos doubled up from 2 polyps to 4 within 6 weeks. Someone in my community uses T5 and he's only at 6 polyps after 6 months. We both bought from same colony.

LEDs the way to go.
