zoas never happy

did some research on the stickies but I am not sure, but what key things should I check water parems wise. I dont know why zoas dont open in my tank. My friend and I swap frags, I have a sugar load of lil hitchhiker polyps on my lr. all lps and sps doing swell.
parems are
salinity 1.025
ph 8.3
nitrate 5-10ppm
phosphate .05-.5 ppm
calc 460
alk ranges daily from 7.9-10, lately have stabilized at 9.5
mag 1250
temp 77.5
plenty of flow mp40 and mp10 in 75 reef
lighting is DIY led fixture on one side with all corals exploding on led side
250 MH x2 24 actnic (t5)

n e way my friends tank has similar parems movement ect and the frag that wont open in my tank comes back almost instantly and I am so annoyed I would love to keep these little guys but dont want to kill them.

any advice welcome ty for reading

Hmmm....your parameters are in check.its gotta be something in your water.what about other corals?Check for pests?

No I don't use any chemical filtration. Just fuge skimmer uv and live rock. I was thinking additive /elements. Were off?

recalibrated my refract, and it was 1.026 so it was off a tad but not majorly. other than that I am so confused.

I don't think it's any of the params.
I would keep phosphates/nitrates close to undetectable.
And the "salinity" between 1.023 - 1.025.
Temperature at 79F works great for zoas/corals.
Still hard to believe the zoas would have a great problem with your params.

It could be something in the water.
Could be a shock (?).
My advice is to place some ChemiPure in the sump and see what happens.
Make sure you put just a little, so the changes won't possibly cause the corals to bleach.
I would try for a week or two, then try some small colony of zoas again.

Another note:
Now a days most people have T5s and LEDs. Perhaps the zoas are coming from a tank with T5s or LEDs and they are having a hard time to addapt to your 250w MH (?).

I'm assuming your tank is mature and there is no other problems.

Make sure that you're not dosing any weird aditives, or any access of aditives/foods.

You didn't tell us what fishes you've got, so once more I'm assuming the fishes are not the problem. Any predators? Check for invert predators at night...

Please keep us posted.

Good luck,

Thanks for the reply Grandis,
As far as fish in the tank, its a couple anthias a foxface and rabbit that are not polyp pickers. And even if they were, the zoas that I try to house are on frag holders, they never mess with the frags, plus not to mention the polyps never open, as in his tank they open after settling.. Hence my wondering if its something in the water.

Phosphates are always on the lower end of the scale.
Nitrates are never over 5 ppm its ridiculous.

I currently have MH and led's and I try varying heights and depths, always starting on the lower end of the scales and bring up. I had a huge colony of red zoanthids and after I moved the colony slowed and died off. Their are still remaining polyps... that open and are staying healthy.

Clove polyps, star polyps, goniopora are all healthy. I will try some chemipure this weekend for sure.

as far as mature tank is set up for 5 months in its place as it sits, but rock and inhabitants stretch to 7 years old. Sps Lps even softy corals all easy to keep.
Ill report the zooas reaction to chemipure... ty again

I have the same problem with almost identical parameters. Except my Nitrates and Phosphates are always 0 and my alk doesn't move from 9. SPS are thriving. Zoas are all dying. (not opening). There are no predators in my tank. New zoa additions never open back up after the first night.

It's very frustrating because I really like them. I'm beginning to think it is a challenge to have SPS and Zoas in the same tank. I have AI LEDs if that aids in the mystery.

Remember, like I've said, just a little of ChemiPure.
Keep watching your corals, specially the Goniopora, though.
Good luck.

Grandis.

When your lights first come on in the morning, you might want to check your zoanthids for nudibranchs. I have some zoas that are not opening like they should and I've been finding these things crawling all over mine. I would like to take the rock out and treat it but the reef is fused together so I'll just continue siphoning them out on site. I also use a toothbrush on occasion and lightly scrub the zoas for any eggs. Check this out.

I thought that at first but then when I tried them instantaneously and they closed. They go in open and within 15 min closed. Which is why I don't think its nudibranch I think its something in my water. I don't know. Its weird
