Zoa's seem to be 'over' extended--->

what kind of light do you have. they look to me like they are reaching for more

I have 520 watts of compact flourescents. They have been higher in our tank but didn't seem as though they 'liked' it there. I might consider moving them back to the top. they are in the middle now, halfway up.
thanks for the input....

i say lack of light, move them up if you can. also the zoa's around button polyps are going to act differnt. they will get long to reach around the button polyps as they are some what shaded from the light when under them and zoa dont seem to like to open their shirts or to say they dont like touching button polyps in some cases. i had a rock mixed with some button polyps and zoa and i ended up just fraging them out and on a new rock and all the zoas that where next to the button polyps have reduced size and now open thier shirts and look normal.

Ok all, so we moved them up in the tank and now they are extended even more, like a 1/4" more. They have been like this for a few days. I think I am going to move them to the bottom. They look really weird.

I would say you need stronger light (T5 or MH). Thats what my zoas looked like when I had PCs. It also looks like the button polyps are starting to overgrow the zoas. If so, I would chop that rock in half to keep them from taking over and killing your zoas.

i would be surprised if 520 wats of compacts wasnt enough light. Although that is what it looks like from the picture.

as a plan be try a lower flow area of your tank.

We are going to get all new bulbs for the two fixtures. We are running two of the aqualight fixtures. They are just now a little over a year old. We are debating whether we want to scrap those and get som metal halides. I was thinking on keeping one of the aqualights and using two 150 watt pendants. How does that sound? The only reason we want to keep the aqualight is for light transistion(dawn/dusk simulation). Would 300 watts of MH with 260 of PC's be enough? Thats only slightly more wattage of what we have now. Thanks for the input. Also, on the splitting of the rock.....I brought that rock home like that....we splitting it really make a difference? Wouldn't that stress the zoas/polyps?
Thanks again...

i run MH and t5 and do not use a chiller. i dont think that is alwas a good way to look at it or not look at it. my fans keep my tank at a stable temp. 2x 120 mm high flow computer fans. i think ther are some cases where a chiller might be needed be needed but not in mine and it was one of my worries when i setup my new lights. overall i would ditch the pc's and go t5 or a mix or t5 and MH 's

this is 520w of pc and i was not happy with it.

this is 350 w MH and 108 of t5's and seed said let there be light.

my lights where ok for fish and some softies but once i started getting into zoa i ended up not be as happy. i also built a new stand and cabinets to hide some of the wiring eye sores sense then. i am not saying go with Mh. i helped setup another tank with 8x 54 t5 same tank and its nice as well. very bright almost over kill.
