Heya folks...i'ts been a while! Many of you may not know the history of this group but about 7 years ago, myself, Vince, Nate, Adam, Dave and a couple others met at my house and formed the Southern Tier Reef Society. Formerly, we were all part of the Upstate Reef Society. Part of the rationale for forming our own group was to be able to conduct local projects and we set about building and maintaining a 180 gallon reef tank and an adjoining sea horse display at the Ross Park Zoo. We were able to do it very cheaply do to equipment, labor and livestock that were donated by us and others. It was a great team effort and the display was one of the most popular exhibits at the zoo and hopefully helped educate the public about the delicate beauty of tropical reef ecosystems. Sadly, I was just informed that the zoo is shutting down that display. There have been numerous administrative changes and budget cuts so it is very understandable. Reef displays as you all know are labor and capital intensive. Further, I have been less available since during the last year i had to relocate and rebuild my psychology clinic due to last years flood, my wife ran for Broome County legislature, I published and am now trying to promote a new book and blog (check out www.mindfulexposurebook.com) .
So it is a bit sad to see it go but seven years is a good run! Thanks to all that helped out. It was (ususally) a lot of fun. Its great to see that STRS lives on. I hope to drop in from time to time.

Are they selling off te coral and stuff to fund the zoo? I'd be interested in buying. It's too bad it was one of me and my families part of the zoo. We go there several times a year.

Doc. B good to hear from you ..Sad news about the zoo , but congrats on the publishing a book.. If they are getting rid of stuff I would be interested as well..

Have a Great Thanksgiving

I'll let the head curator know that folks are interested in purchasing stuff. Its pretty much all softies, some of which are quite huge. Also fish and live rock. They were probably just going to give stuff to local LFSs for store credit. So let me see what I can arrange.

Happy turkey day everybody!!

Nice to see your still on the boards St. James!

Gary: Great to see that your still sharing your knowledge on the boards. Your tank (I saw the video) looks as awesome as ever. "Junior" is enormous! Happy T-day to you as well.

Any word on if they were going to sell things off? This is a true bummer as that was my favorite thing to see there as well as my kids. It would be nice to have a piece of it to just know where it came from.

sorry to hear it is closing! I was surpised at the Baltimore Aquarium that there were so few live coral...

BTW the book looks interesting!
