Zoo Seahorse Tank

Check this out maybe a prospect for the seahorse tank. I have PM’ed him just to check it out. Corals could be used in main tank.

Really not sure what size. We have not had a meeting to talk about what we need yet. But i'm sure we could use most of this stuff.

Not to dampen anyone's hopes, but he has a "75 Gal RR Mixed reef, 30 Gal Sump w/ATO, 125 lbs LR, 4x54 T-5, Octopus NW200 skimmer, 2 x Tunze Nanostreams 6025" so the the tank (IMO) is definately too big/wrong shape, and I'm not sure what else we'd really be interested in other than live rock.
With a 2K budget, the best choice might just be to buy a new 37G or 45G, which shouldn't be that expensive. We may even be able to talk an LFS into getting it at cost.

we can put the corals in the main tank, use everything else, and use the 2k for the chiller we are goin to need for the summer for this tank. and 75 gallon is a great size for larger seahorses, more room for them to swim and more room for us to put kelp and what not for there natural habitat. why is it to big?? 21 tall is perfect, and we dont need to fit it in that window, we can make the hole bigger. we dont need to run the full lighting either, 2 t-5's will be more than enough...this would be the best start every, and we can put most of our money towards the seahorses and pipefish. plus if the zoo could get there hands on a leafy seadragon baby, this would be the perfect size.

You're right about to corals/livestock, we could definately use them in the main tank. My comments were specifically about the seahorse tank. I believe a 75G is 48x18x20. 4 feet in my opinion is too long. I think we need to utilize the space that we currently have, and I would not want to be doing any demolition/construction of walls in the proximity of the main tank.
From my understanding of our original discussions of the sea horse tank, and the advice from people who have kept seahorses, it would be best to keep the seahorse tank simple. Just the tank, and a canister filter to run carbon and provide the low flow that is necessary. Overflows, sumps, powerheads and skimmers are pretty unnecessary, but the real issue is that they add microbubbles which can be very bad for seahorses, and we dont need much flow.
The lighting would be fine, although maybe overkill, as we orignally talked of keeping only some ricordia and such in the tank. If we are going to take a different direction, with large seahorses and baby leafy seadragons, then maybe that setup would be fine. I guess we need to start there, as in what is the main goal.

adam i have been reading on seahorse.org and in the seahorse forum on rc, and there is no direct coralation between Gas Bubble Disease and the use of a skimmer on the system. many seahorse tanks utilize a skimmer for water quality. there have been very little studies and no evidence that states skimmers or micro bubbles for that matter are the cause of Gas Bubble Disease in seahorses. just another thought about the canister filter....look waht happened to franks tank when it had the canister filter on it...aka emptying his tank. just dont want to sway your desition away from the sump and skimmer idea soliey on the Gas Bubble Disease issue. many people have had the Gas Bubble Disease and dont run skimmers or a sump.

nm on the seadragon...did some research on that and there is no way to even have on in that size tank....but some nice large seahorses would be nice in it.

I seen you PM'd him Vince. Thanks for looking into this. Keep us posted if you hear something. That would be quite a windfall for our project.
